Brett and Tal, thank you both for making it more difficult! All of your suggestions are for sale in Europe so I will be busy.

Thank you all for your thoughts. Jim: shipping the unit twice from Europe to the US only for service is out the question, simply to much time and money. Bob and Dave gave a few good suggestions. I found a tube preamp builder only 70 miles away that specializes in bass amps. Looks promising. This is ...

Successor wanted for my Mesa studio preamp

Suggestions wanted for a Successor to my Mesa studio preamp. Recently my studio preamp needed a major overhaul. €350 later my technician warned me that he could fix all problems but next time I might be not so lucky. When I asked what the problem was he said “old age”. Parts are hard to come by (in ...

I agree to everything that Jay is saying. I too dug into this tuning, expended it a little for an S-12 and fell for it. B0b went for simplicity and called it “hybrid” instead of universal for a reason.
Jay; lets pick up B0b’s legacy on this tuning from here and keep it alive.

I can only tell you that my Fuzzy (1972 resembling yours) was not that well made. It was in nothing comparable to the craftsmanship of modern Excel guitars.
If you post a picture of the undercarriage I can tell you more.

You can also try this on your S-10; remove the C pedal and tune your F knee lever to F#. This way your foot can stay at one place and your muscle memory does the rest.

Yes I recognize it completely. It is the reason I sold my D-10 and replaced it with a S-12 with 4 floor pedals and a hybrid tuning(B0b). Left foot over pedal A&B or left foot over 5&6 The rest of the important changes moved over to the knees. I heart about heated socks I might try that. If n...

I converted two D-10s in the seventies and I can tell you that the weight gain is not as much as you would probably like to and still no comparison to the GFI. The 73’ msa is a heavy guitar and if you remove a changer and couple of rods you are still left with the same body and the same aluminum fra...

I do not use the first slot but the third slot It gives a shorter travel of the pedal, but is a little harder to push down. But I prefer it that way

I thank you for your efforts. In the eighties I made cassettes with BE's recordings and exchange them with my BE-fan friends here in Holland. We had fun but this is so much better. It is obvious that Fish had to skip a lot of important songs to keep his fantastic book within the limits of one volume...

Marco, you have got it wrong! I am the friend you are revering to and I did show Jan’s tuning that was printed in a Dutch steel magazine to Jeff in 1977. It was very similar to the universal tuning Jeff started to promote a few years later. Jeff was interested and told me there were people he knew t...

Buddy, Lloyd and Paul article in Peavey Monitor 1996

I never saw any reference to this 1996 article here on the forum, so I thought it is not well known. Not to forget his contribution to the suite steel album from 1970. The first album to feature the pedal steel as a "pop" instrument.

It is a great comfort to know that even if you play a 30 years old pedal steel and you live on the other side of the world and you need some parts, Jim is there to help you out. It took him a day to make the parts and send them. Then the postal services of the US and the Netherlands took 4 months to...
