Name Those Players

Having wound up with a paper copy of this New York Times piece, it seemed really interesting both photos feature steel players. Can we name them?

Dave:

Thanks for the great thread.

Buddy's playing sounds a bit like what he did on Darrel McCall circa 1975.

Note the phase shifter on some cuts. You might be hearing a push-pull through a Peavey Session 500.

Get you some.

Walkihg Waltz

This might be the whole record; I cued it up to a walking waltz with a sticky-bass feel I like a good deal. This may also feature Dicky the singer and songwriter: https://youtu.be/c8AH6jAOUek?list=PLwrT ... 5CcR&t=645.

Beeswax and/or pine rosin/tar might appeal more than saliva. Thinking along the lines of a bowstring (archery) or fly-tying wax.

That's a hot ride, alright, and Lloyd might've been my guess, too. Prague Frank has it down as Weldon Myrick . On There's Something Lonely in this House —one of the other two songs cut on the same session with Louisiana Man—the first fill after the vocals start is a distinctive Weldon phrasing. Howe...

I heard Jimmy Dickens say that he recorded Farewell Party first and Emmons played on it. He did it slow shuffle beat..... like he's so good at doing.:) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1TqQ9piLus Doesn't feel slow versus the Bush and Watson cuts. Interesting, though, and it, of course, predates tho...

The Franklin Drop and The White Wash

It was way more fun when we called it "The Franklin Drop". Tommy White seems to get a lot of mileage out of his implementation (The White Wash?) of these changes. Both players get some compelling sounds. I'd like to have these moves, but I imagine putting them on a push-pull would yield pe...

This Thing

steel had "this thing" that no other steel he's ever played had
It does seem to have this thing . . . or these things . . . nice things. (I'm afraid if I sat down to it, those things might go away . . . or at least be less apparent.)

Did he ever go by "Regular-Sized Jim Webb" to distinguish himself from the "Big" one?

Really solid playing. Thanks for sharing.

Steel players certainly glommed onto Sweet Memories. Part of our beautiful, morose, funereal repertoire, one reckons.

That guy looks like he might be a competent armpit lap slide player, but I read it's pretty easy because all you have to do is kindly slide and waller around a bit.
