IMHO I don't think the vintage instrument market is exclusively a baby boomer phenom, but it sure is predominantly so, just look at the artists on the cover of Vintage Guitar magazine, also the (buying) customers of the big vintage dealers, tell me I'm wrong but looks to me like the mainstay of the ...

Well put David, I notice that the detractors I mentioned also don't care for most singers that have a roots/folk style either.

A number of non-steel playing musicians have commented to me that many of the greats of lap steel and bottleneck style from the 20's and 30's , those that many of us have been greatly influenced by are "way out of tune"and therefore "not good musicians". You need to hang out wit...

Craig, The most important thing is to have the I IV V chords in the most common keys, that would be G, A, C, D and E down solid. II major and bVII chords as well as minor chords come into play as well, but not that much of the time in late 40's/early 50's. For one source of great intros, backing, li...

Yes, still interested and will BUMP this one up, how about the rest of you folks?. I'm looking to get a couple bass players I know from local Bluegrass/Old Time jams to "buy in" on this. A fiddler or two would be nice as well. The singers and (standard)guitarists should be in decent supply...

I wonder is anyone owns the Magnatone name these days? For what the vintage amps sell for I'm surprised to not see reissues. And then the steels could be reissued as well...:-)

That's the one. What I ended up doing was to take the best photos I could find and printed out a mock-up of the logo, checked (and checked again... and again  for dimensions on my G70 and was able to provide the info to the designer.

Own a Magnatone=New Skills

No I haven't, but will look into that, thanks! Sounds like a great idea for any home-made pedals etc. as well- to use instead of a label maker.

Need to BUMP this one... anyone with a MOTS Magnatone, G70/65 or similar size headstock model with the decal still there- could you give me the approximate dimensions of the Magnatone script decal? There's lots of photos of MOTS Maggies around, but the pics are pretty distorted. Thank you!

Magnatone script decal-need dimensions please

Might anyone have, or know of source for repro script logo Magnatone headstock decals? Would be nice to complete my G70. I could find a shop to make one but I thought someone may have them already.

SG future: have them try out a non-pedal steel early.

In the last few months I've taken on 3 new students in non-pedal steel that initially were standard guitar students. Being young kids (8,8 and 7yrs) they found managing even short-scale guitars with low action and light strings tough. I brought my Magnatone, had them try it out and they enjoyed play...

Since the original post and replies I've been able to get some more (not much more) about Dickerson/Magnatone history. Decided to BUMP this in case someone might have missed the original post, and post a few specific q's. The point of this is not only my curiosity, but also to get a website going de...

Dave, That's a fine instrument there, I do think the G-65 was a different model though. I saw a Magnatone brochure page and the G-65 would have had the same chrome plated pickup/bridge assembly plate, nut and other shared components, but had a more deluxe body contour, including the "gumby"...

If I may suggest, use a C6 tuning, it's the same intervals for the top 6 strings as the higher-pitched 8 string E6 tuning Don Helms used with Hank Williams Sr.. Also seems to be the most popular tuning with the great Hawaiian-style players here on the SGF. DeWitt "Scotty" Scott's excellent...

Anyone play/have photo of Magnatone G-65?

I play a Magnatone G-70 in the "sable" finish (also came with a MOTS covering). I know it was the budget single-neck model in the mid-50's to the more expensive G-65 which came in blonde or walnut. Would love to see a photo of that one and any comments on it's sound etc. Yet to even see on...

Well Eric you have my vote  The general overdrive/distortion question has been discussed quite a bit here on the SGF, but I haven't seen anything on the Nvl112 for stage sound with a dobro/reso pickup... Might a good acoustic amp like a Crate do the dobro pickup and clean lap steel? The bigger ...

How do the stomp boxes like Tube Screamers work out with the Nashville's? Close to a overdriven Fender sound? I like the breakup sound of the Lap Steel with a Fender Deluxe Reverb (reissue) on 6 or 7. Shoot, y'know all this would be so easy if a local shop had steel guitar amps!-at least one or two....
