My question for Tom and anyone else. I read (but didn't fully understand) the section on piano tuning which I assume is for a mechanical piano. What about a keyboard whose sounds are generated electronically, is it just temperament? And what about an electronic steel guitar that you can do whatever...

Practicing on a 10 string nonpedal?

I travel a lot and can't carry a pedal steel. Would a ten string lap steel or practice board be good for practicing e9 pedal steel and how much better would it be. Than an 8 string or even a six string (tuned to e9)? Any thoughts recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I am a beginner.

I am totally confused. I thought I had seen a schedule for Oct 14 headlining Lynn Owsley as your featured player for this year and the last player. I could not find a schedule on your Facebook page but saw a female singer Tena G... as your headliner, then that disappeared. I know I am normally in a ...

What are you referring to as Add9 tuning? Thanks Darrell, if we're to give names to things, the F# is the "9" in E9. Its the 9th step in the E major scale, as Jim described. With chords, and tunings, if there isn't any kind of 7th tone present, as in the tuning being discussed, we'd call ...

I have explored that tuning on lap steel, it has some very good qualities. As a tuning, the 'add9' is pretty modern sounding, with no 7th or 6th present. It certainly would help with E9 fretboard understanding. Try it out and see for yourself if you like it or not. What are you referring to as Add9...

I have a pedal steel but want something to practice on when I travel. The pedal steel is just too heavy and expensive to haul around.

Middle six of pedal steel for lap steel/dobro?

What about tuning a lap steel or dobro guitar to the middle six strings of the E9 pedal steel, for practice and for learning. Can I get any decent sounds with it or is it just a waste of time? Or would I be better off using the lower six strings of the E9 pedal steel? Thanks so much!

Best Club band was The Insiders at Pearls dance hall with Reggie Rueffer on fiddle and Gary Carpenter on steel. Reggie is absolutely the most phenomenal fiddle player. Best big name was David Alan Coe. He was a phenomenal performer in his younger days. He would sing for three hours without a break. ...

Best bet by far for country music is the Music City Bar and Grill. The Nashville Palace is more oriented in my experience to draw a crowd than to draw country music enthusiasts, but you might find a decent band there also.

It is funny to me how steel players talk about how bad their playing is when the one steel intro that most non musicians tell me they love is Toy Caldwell's intro to Searching for a rainbow, which steel players think is horrendous.

Can someone who has a better knowledge of music than me give an objective analysis of how the current music people refer to as country differs from the country music of the 50's through the 90's? Best well known guitar player

I have a friend I talk to about music. He has an incredible knowledge about guitars and music, he was a professional bass player, he claims his 6 string guitar talent is (I can make any of them sound bad"). He also has an extensive collection of guitars, some rare. I asked who his favorite guit...
