That was wonderful. Any idea of how his Dobor is tuned? Does he use the same thumb and finger pick set up "we" use?

Eric, I beleive you're right. It is modeling. But who cares what something is called (except for the marketers)? What it does is more important to me. My first impression (based on guitar, mostly as I have not downloaded and set up the Reso patch) is positive. My resoguit does sound better using the...

Well since I've got the Fisman reso pickup already in and I play both guitar and mandolin, I'm going to make the plunge and get one. I'll let you all know how it sounds after I've downloaded the appropriate patches and done the appropriate tweeking.

Fishman Aura and pickup for Resoguit

Has anyone here tried the combo of fishman reso-guit pickup and the Fishman Aura. I see Fishman has a downloadable patch for a Scheerhorn with this pickup. I do not have a Scheerhorn, but I do have a Regal Black Lightning with a Beard cone and an upgraded bridge. I would love for it to sound more li...

I made a new bridge and it has really improved string life(!?!?) I made slots that are really shallow and that sems to help. I'm not sure why but it has. (yes I do carry a few extra 0.026's just in case, er, in my case, and I do use them but maybe not so many will be needed, now) thanks for all the ...

Alkire 10-string

There is an Alkire 10 string with 2 pickups and four legs for sale at a local shop. What are your opinons on this instrument? The date of manufacture is unknown. I am told "'39 to 50's" but no more. What is the going price for one in reasonable (not pristine but not beat) condition with ca...

Beard vs quarterman cones: news from the front

In case you are interested... I just put a Beard cone in my Regal Black Lightning. I had messed things up through the installing and subsequent "adjusting" of a Fishman pickup (but that is another story). The old cone was dented so I thought I'd start over with a new cone. I opted for the ...

I played the Elixiers on my guitars for several years because I hate changing strings (I play a 6 string Martin, a Rickenbacker 12, a mandolin, a lap steel, a couple of Tels's...). Too many instruments, only one instrument tech (me!) I always thought the advantage of the coated strings was the lack ...

Thanks for the all input I have as a matter of course, bought extra strings to replace the naughty G's and have been using 0.028's but they are wound. I 'll try plain 28's and see how that works. Part of the problem is that I tend to play all my instruments hard and tend to break more strings than t...

Why do my G strings go bad so quickly?

I'm a relatively new resonator guitar player wiht a Regal Black Lightning. My higher G string (3rd) lasts only 1/2 as long as the others. Is this just because I use it a bit more than the others for leads? I bought some Pearse strings that claimed to have a "special" G string that was supp...

A local player here in Boise uses a kick drum pedal directly hitting a shure SM57. No drum needed. I sounds pretty good.

I have the Artisan with the legs and here is what I have found. The legs are fine for sit-down playing but a bit flimsy for standup. Now having said that I do play it standing up in my rock band and it works OK. When I sit down and play it, they are plenty sturdy. I like the centimeter calibration o...

Bob (last off topic comment, I promise). It is a small world (and a hot one, 5th day in a row of 100+ weather. During mid summer I really miss the Pacific Northwest.) Enjoy some cool for me.

Hey Bob, I see you live in Port Ludlow. I lived in Port Townsend for almost 10 years BSG (before steel guitar). I don't know anyone here in Boise that plays lap steel and if I were still in PT I'd know someone nearbywho did! But, when I was in PT, I was too busy working to even play guitar (my first...

Jan, I am interested in buying your fret board as I wish to build an 8-string lap steel after seeing Junior Brown last week. I've only been playing the 6-string for a few months (in G tuning) but wish to branch out to 8 string and other tunings. Would you be open to selling and shipping it to the US...

I saw Junior last night here in Boise and man what a show! He was hot...and loud! It hurt everyone's ears at first and the sound guy said Junior wanted it loud. Junior does not use monitors so relies on the sound coming back at him to hear the rest of the band, I guess. He stands right in front of a...
