Not a great idea to chime in on what is clearly an ongoing debate between two regulars, both of whom I have respect for. http://steelguitarforum.com/wink.gif However, my research and experiences (I'm quite positive far less than the two contestants here) quite heavily lean in favour of many of Roman...

I'm guessing it's a 6th. The only tuning I've ever used on lap steel is C6, and I can do the "Hawai'ian Gliss". Image

Cheers for that!

Do you just have to make extra-sure that the tuners are in the right spot in order to get the strings spaced out evenly, or is the rod grooved at all?

What do you plan on using for nut/bridge material? I have a few options, but some of them are costly. I want a nut like those found on many commercial products, but they don't seem to be available as aftermarket products. I don't "mind" making my own bridge and nut (and I've done it before...

I picked up the SP2 and I'm really liking it so far. Once you've been using a hunk of a bar like the Ernie Ball one I've practiced with, it feels a touch "unsubstantial" by comparison. But on the other hand, the EB is kind of a behemoth. I definitely feel more agile with the SP2, but the t...

Simply awesome. I agree that it's totally pro-sounding, particularly in execution but even in production values!

My ears still aren't good at identifying tunings, so would you care to share which tuning you used? Open G?

Thanks, Larry and Travis. I know it wasn't "my" thread, but that's helpful to me. http://steelguitarforum.com/wink.gif The Ernie Ball (not to defame the name or anything, because it could be my own fault) has become almost unusable for me, in only less than a month of non-serious non-inten...

I agree with Matthew. You could use an "aluminum angle" (used in home construction) in lieu of steel and you'll still get reasonable tone and sustain, too. Or, you could use something like a Trem-Nut bridge by Graphtec, and shape it (it's easily shaped with a file) appropriately. The nut c...

Does the surface scratch up much on the Shubb products? On my Ernie Ball bullet bar, I find even the smallest-seeming scratches cause some really ugly string noise and will 'pluck' the string at times.

Thanks, Mark. Looks intriguing. If I get any other non-tubular bar, It's gotta be able to maintain positive contact with the strings in an upright position with only minimal assistance. Is this such a bar? (in other words, with just a light touch on top, it shouldn't have the tendency to want to &qu...

I "accidentally" (ie. I was still ignorant) bought a GS-1 to use with my lap steel, at the time not realizing that I was going to learn C6 and slant-style playing first. I can tell you this, though: for what they're designed for, they're simply awesome. That sharp edge makes pull-offs a sn...

Never a waste! You've learned all kinds of things en route to where you are now. http://steelguitarforum.com/wink.gif A 10-string pickup will work fine if it fits where you want to put it. You'll just have extra polepieces. Some people are sticklers about aligning the strings over the polepieces, im...

In the distant future (the designer and I are not on a timeline, but the ball's rolling) I'll have a stacked, active P-90 style "single coil" (not really because it's stacked, but you know...) for a lap steel build. I'm quite looking forward to hearing it and seeing if there's a bigger pla...

Whether an actual Boss product, or a homebrew with a silkscreened/waterslide decal, I'm not really sure. But I DO know that I'm intrigued. I like the minimalist approach, even in the slightly complex-looking bridge. Looks to have several collars and levers, which would indicate some tuning trickery,...

I've always seen Jack Johnson as sort of "middle of the road" music, but it's clips like that which remind me that whether he actually achieves greatness or not, he's sincere in his songwriting and is a genuine singer. Ben Harper's single-string lines were understated examples of good comp...

Thanks for the replies. Last night I grabbed the GS-1 first, and practiced for a while. My girlfriend was there, and she knows all about my "conundrum" so she knew what I meant when I said, "man, this is SO much easier!" Then, as if to prove it to myself, I grabbed the bullet bar...
