John, I don't think Just Play the Melody teaches much new information, but it does do a good job of showing how to connect what you learned from Up From the Top. I found it helpful.

Back on topic, I learned to play from Newman's courses. IMO there is not a perfect teacher, what may be great for one may be not for another. But for me, Jeff Newman was a bullseye when I started steel, a perfect teacher for me. I envy those who had the chance to learn from him in person. If you are...

Because Harry, I love chiles! I grew those jalapenos, picked them, took that picture, then ate 'em. We've had a few rare freezes down here in S TX, so all my chiles are gone. No worry, I'll soon plant more, plus we'll have chile montes, or wild chiles, sprouting up soon, just have to find them and m...

John, I would suggest either The Chord Connection and/or Just Play The Melody as your next courses from Jefran. They both are great and will keep you busy, then move on to Minor Chord course.

The Up From The Top course was for the A&B pedals and the D&F levers, nothing else. If you're learning to play steel, that will keep you busy for awhile. Look for some the other Newman courses, The Minor Chord Connection I think it is, that covers the C pedal as well as minor chord substitut...

Ronald, I've seen pics of this before and always have admired it. Great looking steel, very classy. Can't speak for this one, but my Derby has a sound I really enjoy. Plays easy too. Lot of SS underneath, built to last a lifetime. Someone will get a great steel. BTW, didn't you mean 24"scale?

Dickie, do you think? It's mighty red, Hot Rod Red. Who needs to exercise when you can look down at this and your heart rate increases, get your cardio workout while playing! What I'd like to do is have someone airbrush my avatar on the opposite side of this guitar using the red for color of one chi...

Earlier I posted a pic of a friend's Excel and got some positive feedback, and for a few hours even I thought I was cool. But I'm not. I have a Derby and Carter and the logos are there. I've seen the comments that Carter logos are ugly or look like they belong on a water heater, that's funny. And th...

go-kat-go.

Go to "search site" and type 'trucker girl'. It's the mini trucker girl for $9.99. He says it doesn't help his playing but truckers honk when they drive by.

Well, we did a highly scientific test yesterday at the Legion with a zirc vs BJS bar, played on a universal MSA Millennium, and Bud Light was the beer of choice. He constantly changed bars throughout each song and I picked a prime seat to listen. The results: I thought the zirc made more of a differ...

Cranky Dave, no argument from me. Before posting I did a search and found several negative opinions on the Bose system, including yours. Only thing I know is what I heard while playing. The other comments about the sound levels in different parts of the room were from others that were there. A matte...

This Friday & Saturday I played with a Canadian couple's band, their steel player had a mild heart attack and is out a few days. They used the Bose L-1 PA with subwoofer, a single tower. They play a 4 piece, no drums, acoustic guitar, bass and steel. I was really impressed at the sound of the PA...

Peavey Vypyr 75

I bought a Vypyr 75 not long ago to use for guitar, and bought it on the advice of a longtime steeler/guitar player. I was looking for something cheap and light. He borrowed it recently because he was curious to see how it worked for steel. He played it the first set last night, I was surprised at h...
