Gary, I have two 45s by this Bakersfield guy. There's not much on the internet about him. I found one advert for him playing at a place called the Alley Cat in the Bakersfield newspaper from the early sixties. Did he ever get any local airplay? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnJDWWfdAZM https://www...

Here ya go,

Wes Buchanan with I think Gene Davis singing harmony.
Maybe Mooney on steel but I'm not sure. I have a copy
of this one but there's no harmonica on the version I have.

Gary, that one was by West Coast singer Wes Buchanan. I think Gene Davis sang harmony. I have a couple of copies of that 45 around somewhere. Could be Mooney on steel? Smokey used to perform at the Magnolia Opry in Texas in the 90s. He was a DJ in Houston in the fifties. Here's a couple of shuffles ...

He's in the background on this clip with Roger Miller. Looks like Bobby Durham in the background on rhyt...

Houston area guys-Who were the steelers?

I was just wondering if anybody knew what steelers played on the Houston area records labels back in the '50s and '60s. Labels like D, Allstar, Triumph, Skill, Nu-Star, Stoneway. Recording with singers like Eddie Noack, Wiley and Jesse Barkdull, Adrian Roland, Phil Parr, Jimmy Copeland, Mary McCoy, ...

Thumbs

Good song. I think I have that on a LP of guitar instrumentals.

Here's a video of Thumbs and Roger Miller on the Ralph Emery show from 1966. Looks like they might have had a late night before doing the show.

The bass player is

James Hollie and I think the guitar player's name is Charlie Carter. Both of them also had some singles of their own out on the Musicor label in the 60's.
