9th Chord grips in a C6th turning
Hey all, long time listener, first time caller. I tried the search function but couldn't find anything. Does anyone have any tab or diagrams of 9th chord grips for a C6th tuning with E on top? I'm thinking they aren't movable due to the 9th interval. Thanks!

Good overall maintenance lubricant
Hey all,
Newbie here asking what is I'm sure a standard question. (I did attempt a search, but with no luck.)
What would be a good lubricant for my Carter Starter?
Would 3 in 1 oil be OK?
Thanks for your information.

Curtis, Thanks also for the information. Yeah, I've noticed that it really sounds nice to 'pedal' into a note. I sure do feel like a fish out of water on the pedal steel. Right now it seems so foreign to play. I practice my non-pedal a minimum of 2 hours a day when my band The Smokin Menehunes isn't...

My Cheatin' Heart
Hi all, Long time non-pedal player, short time pedal player. I decided to buy a pedal steel and really, really, love the sound and chordal possibilities. However, I sort of feel like I'm cheating on my wife (not that I ever have) by making the switch. (please don't tell my non-pedal brothers). Anywa...

Good question. I have a '54 Fender T-8 and I've gone through about every tuning I could find out about. I currently have stringed E 7th on the bottom, C6th in the middle, and a straight G major on top (only use 6 strings). Over the years though, for me anyways, I've decided it's best to just get rea...

I picked up a model 59 (1937) a couple of months ago at a vintage surf and Hawaiiana meet at the Huntington Beach pier. I'll probably never play it as I love my Fender T-8, but I bought it because to me it represented a beautiful period in steel guitar. And that is a period when the steel was so pop...

After years of stalling, I finally decided to just run my steel through the bands PA system. At first it sounded a bit thin. Then I bought a SansAmp and it really sounds good! As I'm the one who always has to set the PA up and all the related stuff, it sure is nice to NOT have to bring my amp and mi...

How Do I Know My Pickups (not my trucks!) Need Rewiring?
Hey all,
I play a '54 Fender T-8 with the trapizoid pickups. I've heard folks talk about getting their pickups re-wired. As far as I can tell, my pick output sounds even between each of the necks. But how do I know if all my pickups need to be re-wired?

Well, as far as lots of gigs and Hawaiian steel, I'd have to say there is a connection. I was a standard guitar player of rock and what not for 25 years. Since moving up to Hawaiian steel guitar and playing in a Hawaiian/jazz band, I've had more gigs then ever. Period. In my old rock days, if I play...

We play with an ukulele player every Friday night, he's a fellow named Bill Tapia. He's 98 years old, a fantastic player, and he talks story about the old days to the people before he plays some tunes with us. Last Friday he talked about playing with the best Hawaiian musician ever - Andy Iona - ear...

Bob Brozman is technically fantasic and all, but he's a bit too much into himself for my taste. He's extremely condescending about anyone that plays ANY Hawaiian music after, say, Captain Cook came to the islands in the late 1700s. He lambasts Hawaiian music's bastardization by the evil white man, w...

Looking for CD of back up tunes to jam with
I remember an ad in the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association newsletter that listed where I could get some background CD's to practice soloing over, but I didn't write it down.
Anyone have any info. I'm really hoping for background Hawaiian music.
Thanks

Smokin' Menehunes in Huntington Beach
Aloha all, My little lounge trio, The Smokin' Menehunes, is playing every Friday night at Catalina Fish Kitchen in Huntington Beach,CA. We play from 7:00 to 9:30. We get a number of great local talent in the area, such as Bill Tapia and friends, to come sit in on a guest mic we always have set up. F...

Funny thing about the word 'Haole'. It doesn't generally have a positive spin to it when some kanaka screams it out his car window at you crossing the street. However, the more you learn about the small and large parts of Hawaiian culture, and the more you hang out with the island braddahs, the more...

I'm not trying to come off like I know anything that anyone else can't learn, but... I always found that the best way to learn any tuning, backwards and forwards, is to break it down to its fundamental components. On TAB sheet, write down what the intervals are between each sting. G to A, well... it...
