Bobby, I believe what you're referring to is known as 'side-chain' compression. That's when a track is compressed based on another signal entering the compressor through its 'side-chain.' One use of this technique is sometimes called 'ducking,' as it 'ducks' one sound when another is heard. For inst...

Who's Playing with Vince?
Saw Vince Gill's show on Saturday night. Absolutely wonderful. One very small thing that spoke volumes was the fact that the show was scheduled to start at 7:30. At 7:29 seventeen musicians walked onstage in the dark. At 7:30 the lights went on and the music began. (Went to 11) What a way to show re...

Prob tuning changes
First off, I've tried searching the archives and haven't been able to find a post that addresses this issue... I play a Derby SD-10 and recently changed strings...this time, however, the gauges must have been a little different--the 10th string B to C# raise on pedal A isn't right...it ends up way f...

Help me ID old Jeffran course...
I have an old copy (20+ years??)of a Jeffran course that is missing the cover and title pages, etc...and I'm trying to figure out what course it might be. It's divided into forty lessons or '40 weeks'. It appears to be an entry level course, and the tab is all handwritten, not typed. (Very neat hand...

Billy-- I have a 2001 Derby SD-10. It came with the ABC pedals in the 2,3,4 positions counting from left. There is a blank pedal spot at position 1. The LKL hangs just a hair to the left of the B pedal. I needed to add a little 'play' to LKL so I could rock from A to B without engaging it. Everythin...

This is a pretty crazy fix, but it worked great for me on a single neck steel that I started on. I was having the same prob, strings sliding out of tune after just a few minutes. The tuning machines did not have any screws on them, so couldn't be tightened or adjusted at all. So I took some long rub...

So yesterday I took everyone's advice and made some changes. First of all, I realized that the LKL had a stop-screw near the rear apron (closest to me)and had been traveling out to far, raising way past F. (When I bought the guitar, the lever was loose and could be pushed forward and back on the cro...

Good idea...the tennis ball...will work on it...like I alluded to before, if you know that there's a way to practice/work to get someplace, it turns a problem into a challenge, then a solution. Have done some adjusting of rods and levers (screws) and in the process learned a bit about how all this w...

Thanks John... I had looked for the setscrew that Paul and Robert mentioned, and didn't see it, because as you said, it's hidden until the lever folds up. I do have some room to move it, and will do that as well as raise the A pedal a bit...yes, it's in the second position. I've already modified my ...

You guys are just GREAT! Dennis...I am already sitting squared up on the 15th fret...I think it was Maurice Anderson that said that somewhere. Lee...I was just sitting there a few minutes ago looking at my feet and thinking about how I've seen players with their A pedal a bit higher, and how this mi...

LKL in the way of AB to A roll
I'm really jacked about moving from a Maverick (yeah, I know...) to a Derby 3x5. However, when I go to roll my foot from AB to only the A pedal, the LKL is pressed by my knee. I can't seem to roll without activating it. The LKL can be pushed forward, though, so that my knee can roll out without enga...

Harmonic Tuning-E9
I'd like to learn how to tune an E9th neck harmonically. Sat down and tried to just 'figure it out' and realized that I was re-inventing the wheel. Does anyone have a chart, or a website, or written instructions that could short-cut my attempts?
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer...

Funny you should ask, Bobby! I was just sitting here wondering that myself...I seem to prefer the higher pitches a lot...in other words, I have to 'remind' myself sometimes during a song to move to the 6-8-10 grip and play 'down there' as well. So it's something I'm working on, as it obviously adds ...

Newbie Question...10 or 12?
Just joined the forum after gaining lots of info in the last two months. That's the time I've been playing steel, and it's been awesome. However, it's time for me to upgrade from my little starter bud. Even though I'm pretty sure I'm gonna be using E9 most of the time, I'm wondering if I should be t...
