Kenny,
IF you happen to have an iPhone or iPad Peterson has a great app called iStrobo Tuner.
Costs $10 as I recall. You can even purchase "sweetened" tunings for lots of instruments, including pedal steel.
I love this app.
Go to the Apple App Store and search iStrobo Tuner.

I just happened across this post . . . Bill and I were good friends from the first sentence. I was lucky enough to share the stage with him several times. The rascal could play the devil out of ANYthing he leaned up against. He had the uncanny ability to play down to the level that most of us folks ...

James,
Sorry to hear you’re having Excel trouble. There is very probably not a better resource on the Excel than Bill Stafford. I suggest talking to Bill and getting his take on this. He and Mitsuo were the co-designers of the Excel Superb. If anyone can help you, Bill’s da man!
Good Luck

Everyone knows that the best seat in the house is at the sound board. Well, I ran the board all day and had the VERY BEST seat in the house for what's already on the road to being the South's VERY BEST steel show! If you missed it this time, don't make that mistake again. It'll only get better, so y...

I’m glad this thread came up. I got my first PSG in June (‘05) and have been trying pretty hard to wade into it. It’s an Excel Superb U-14, 8 + 7 with E-lock. You probably think I’m crazy to jump on that much guitar as a novice. Trust me, there have been PLENTY of nights that I thought the same thin...

Guys,
Had the pleasure 10 or 12 days ago of sitting next to Bill at Tim Bridges' house with three steels set up. Believe me, Bill is the real deal! He's a great player, a great guy, and his P/P sounds wonderful.

Musically, a very intimidating afternoon!

I think some folks let the idea of learning theory scare them off before they find out how easy it CAN be. Yes, third and fourth year music majors study some VERY difficult theory. But most of us out here playing gigs will rarely (probably never) need or use the really heavy-duty stuff. That having ...

Drew, You’re very close to Bill Stafford’s tuning . . . However, the LKL doesn’t raise the #12 open “E” to “F”; and the RKL doesn’t lower the #13 open “B” to “Bb”. I only know this because I’m lucky enough to own Bill’s original Excel U-14 Superb. Never dreamed that I’d own a guitar of this caliber....

Roy,
As you know, you and I RARELY break strings (on topic) because we both own Excel Superbs!

However, I'm pretty sure that this "modulus of elasticity" thing is what's happening to my knees!

I find a mouse pad to be the perfect surface for "jamming my picks back on my fingers."

It protects the picks, and is still stiff enough to get the job done. Also, mark your picks and always use the same pick on the same finger. lrh
