It's great to see people still interested in Highway 101 and posting about it on the forum! My time with 101 was short lived since I joined in '89 just before Paulette left. We did so many dates (over 200 in one year!) that it's always seemed like it was longer than it actually was. In late 1990 whe...

Playing downtown this weekend during CMA Fest

Hi Chuck. I'll be playing downtown Friday night at The Full Moon Saloon from 6:30-10pm and Saturday morning at Paradise Park with the Good Ole Boys from 10am-2pm. Legit old school country with a few blues songs thrown in on occasion.......

Gary Brandin

Geez Gary....now I feel bad. I was just kidding back with you! Are you still involved with the sponge bob soundtrack? I was thinking recently about how we met during the country rock era in southern California. You were playing steel with The Phantom Herd at Isadore's and I was playing with Lost Ang...

George's Roundup

You're a funny man Gary Brandin! Glad to see you STILL have a full head of hair. By the way, I used to love sneaking in to watch you play with your band GARY BRANDIN and the BRANDIN' IRONS. I seem to recall you had the house gig at The Bunkhouse......

Resophonic Rodeo tuning

Hi Ray. I actually ended up having Paul Beard build me a seven-string resonator guitar which has the fourth string tuned to E. It's basically a standard G dobro tuning with an E string located in the middle between the two triads. I also tune the fourth string up to F when I want a G7th tuning. Havi...

California days

Hey Jerry. Thank you for the incredibly nice compliments. Those days playing with Danny Michaels were amazing! When I joined Danny I could barely even tune the C6 neck, let alone play it. Thanks to Danny's patience I was able to earn while I learned. Being a single man and in my early 20's, I had pl...

Steel guitar exposure

Yes....I did perform the Concerto for Pedal Steel at the Ryman with the Nashville Chamber Orchestra. It was written by Michael Levine from Los Angeles and was a very complex piece of music. In spite of its complexity it was a thrill to perform. Unfortunately the orchestra was too short of funds to m...

Steel guitar exposure

Thought I'd put this out there even though the topic has been broached previously. After playing steel professionally for most of my life, I'm still amazed at how many people are unaware of the steel guitar and how many hits and genres it has appeared on/in. I myself have been guilty of not recogniz...

Pete Drake or Curly Chalker?

I'm wondering if it was perhaps Pete Drake and not Curly Chalker who played steel along with the piccolo on Simon & Garfunkle's "THE BOXER." The Boxer was on the final studio album they released titled Bridge Over Troubled Water. I found a discography that lists Pete Drake as being on ...

This is awesome hearing from so many of my friends on here again! Would have responded sooner but I'm out with B & D and we're hitting it hot and heavy. HOT would be the key word here today in Dallas as we're about to play the Starplex amphitheatre tonight. It's in the 90's and humid! Danny....t...

Brett.....I've sold all but two of my Sho Bud pro II guitars and I keep them as a backup. I've switched to playing the Desert Rose full time. Yes, I'm familiar with the Jackson and actually tried one out before deciding to go with the Desert Rose instead. Here was my reason. The best way I can descr...

Hey Stu....great to hear from you! After experimenting for awhile I finally settled on using a larger bass bow and bass rosin. I primarily played on the first string (F#) and it didn't have any negative effect on the string other than having to wipe the rosin off with a soft cloth. Having a long del...

Mitch...I nearly always have the compressor on. The Keeley is perfect for my set-up and when I take it out I always miss the effect it adds. All compressors are not created equal. If you have an opportunity to try the Keeley I would highly recommend it. A lot of lead players use them so maybe you ca...

Ron.....I use both delays on pedal steel. Typically the DE-7 is set on a short delay for mid to up-tempo songs and the MXR carbon copy is set for long delay primarily for lush ballad tones. On occasion I use both at the same time for a multi-tap effect. David......I'm amazed that you have a recordin...

B & D tribute show

I would like to thank everyone here for all of the nice comments and compliments. The tribute show was a pleasure to play on. There were several questions posted here and I'll do my best to answer all of them. As Kevin Hatton pointed out, I was playing a single-neck Desert Rose. I own two double-nec...

Maybe It Was Memphis

Dave, you are correct about there being some confusion as to who played on the Pam Tillis song Maybe It Was Memphis. The answer is BOTH of us...lol. The original cd version had a guitar solo by Jon Jorgenson and had Bruce Bouton on steel. However, the song exceeded 4 minutes in length and was a bit ...

Jagwire Strings

I've been using Jagwire Strings for the past few years and have to agree that they are the best string for pedal steel ever made. They last a long time and stay in tune consistently. I've also been using them for dobro with equally great results.

Brooks & Dunn "Cowgirls Don't Cry"

I've been asked several times recently about who played steel on the new Brooks & Dunn single "Cowgirls Don't Cry" since I record and tour with them. Thought I would post here to clear up the confusion. The answer depends on whether or not it is the cd version or the radio "duet v...
