Drinking at venues
I have a weekly job at a local club where alcohol is served, but most people drink in limited quantities, and have designated drivers. It's totally unlike jobs in the '70's and '80's, with obnoxious drunks, fights, and brawls. I miss the music from those days, but not the drunks. (Even the women got...

String wraps vs keyless
I was breaking .011 G# strings on my SKH Emmons LeGrande. The spokesperson at Emmons recommended putting at least 6 wraps around the post. That stopped the problem, which had to do mostly with the sharper angle of the shortened amount of excess string going onto the short key head. This was apparent...

Sho Bud keys
A few years ago I replaced the keys on my old LDG. The originals were Grover "Milk-Bottle" style. At the time, Stewart-Macdonald sold them in sets of six. You might check with them. I had to carefully grind stock from the key shafts to allow clearance between the 5th and 6th strings on the...

GFI pickup mounting
What Jack said. I replaced both Lace Alumitone p/u's on my D-10 Ultra with factory GFI II's. No problems with the height with excellent tone ability from my Quilter Steelaires.

Steelaire too trebly
I play a GFI Ultra keyless D-10 thru a Quilter Steelaire combo amp as well as a a Steelaire rack thru a TT 15" cab. The pickups are GFI II's. I have had 0 complaints about tone. I got rid of the active volume pedals, skinny cables and light tone bars. I use regular guitar cables, a pot pedal an...

Rusty Young's steel guitars
The last time that I saw Rusty live was in the early '70's in Akron, OH with Paul Cotton (Richie Furay had departed.) From my prospective (in the audience) it looked like Rusty was playing a Sho-Bud D-10 plus a Sho-Bud S-10 and both steels appeared to be clad in white formica. Rusty used the D-10 wi...

Thanks Jerry. I misspoke: They are pull bars. On the B-C# change, (changer 1, pull bar 1, the aluminum pull bar is bent towards the changer will not raise the string to pitch. I'll see if one of my bell cranks fits.

MCI Questions
Wayne, thank you for your most generous offer. I was able to download the the MCI manual and give it to the owner of the guitar that we are working on. The manual has a picture of a tone bar (bell crank); but strangely without numbering the slots. Of course, in a 5-slot setup, #3 is in the middle. L...

MCI questions
Looking at the MCI steel guitar's version of a bell crank, how are the slots numbered? Is the #1 slot postion the farthest one away from the guitar body?
Also, has anyone attempted to re-fit these guitars with a GFI bell crank system?

Reading PSG tab
Seriously, I would recommend looking at the late Jimmie Crawford's Musym-Tab system. I use it with anything that I tab. It is adaptable to any guitar or tuning. Brilliant, and universal in its approach.

Falling picks
I can verify that there are no "best" finger picks, just those that work for you. I bought a couple of sets of Hi-Riders. They work well for me. (Plus, no resinous crap fouling up my strings.) The only thing that I wish was that the picks were made of a little bit thicker steel, to prevent...

Jimmie Crawford
I remember viewing some of Jimmie's equipment cases. They were stenciled "Jimmie Crawford/ Foster & Lloyd." I'm sure that he toured with both Foster & Lloyd (as well as Radney Foster.) since he was the senior bandmate, they nicknamed him "Craw-paw." (Not to stray too far ...

Dickey Overbey tuning
One of the most under-rated masters of all time. From what I could learn: Pedals 1,2,3 standard Emmons changes. LKL raised string 7, F# to G. RKL raised the top F# to G/G# and lowered the D# to D/C#. RKR lowered both E's to Eb. He also had a split tuning on his 6th string. From Ricky Davis: "Th...
