Forum Member Percentages Who Actually Play The Steel Guitar

Is tuning...........really important?

Absolutely! Theoretically, multiplayer music is a collaborative effort. Playing in tune rates up there with every one playing the correct chords/notes at the correct time - playing the same song together. In a group brawl however, we take our chances. There are those who simply do not know the diffe...

It's really impossible to buy the Best guitar without sitting down and playing many. What are the goals? What kind of music? There is a brand I know that sits very nicely in any mix with very little tweeking. There is a lot of new stuff on the radio where the steel sounds wrong. Just plain wrong. A ...

I have a Sierra with no sustain at all. If I don't use a compressor, it rings like clay. It's a S12 set up as a 10 string 3/5. I'm always new at it and 10 is enough. The other pedals are long gone, however the bellcranks and crossrods are still in place. Does all the extra, unused stuff kill the sou...

Another who strolled into the the Sho-Bud store was Eric Clapton. He bought several Strats. Gave away a couple and used the rest to assemble his Blackie which he used through the 70's and early 80's.

I keep my amp mic'd in an isolated closet wrapped in blankets. Mic into a cheap compressor then into a mixer. This mess goes to my stereo. The compressor prevents the raw sound from the amp from poofing the stereo speakers. Adds just enough mud so it sounds part of whatever CD I'm attempting to lear...

I heard Chevy is suing Ford because the handles that roll the windows Down turn clockwise and to roll them up is counterclockwise. This is only on the drivers' side, the passenger side is the oppisite and neither can decide who stole the idea from Packard.

Does the tuning really matter? The song gets played and it fits. I bought my first steel for my 50th birthday. There are things in life which keep us young and learning this thing is it for me. I like not knowing and having to ask how to play something. I can move around a 8string lapsteel C6th in a...

My cat has gotten his tail caught in the open frame of my volume pedal a few times. I've dropped my bar on him and he still insists on napping under the steel when I practice. He's not the brightest apple on the tree.

Hang in there. Don't try to play like Mr. Emmons or Mr. Franklin. One goal is to play what is in your head. I don't know if you want to play only Country or are open to other styles. Try learning Hendrix's Little Wing. Play it slow and let the sound flow through and around you. Don't concentrate on ...

Hi fellas. Just a little playfulness dealing with learning this great instrument. There are times when nothing goes right. Trying to learn a song by ear and forget where the minors and 7ths are. I've found it's best to laugh it off and walk away. Other times it's heaven. I'm better at it than I was ...

Tampered tuning

I've been making noise on my steel just a month and spend a lot of time with it. I write out charts to help me find notes and chords, which strings, pedals and levers do what. At the end of an evening of concentrated practice, I'm sure I finally have a good idea what I'm doing. Now, here's the probl...

Hi, I'm a newbie and started on lapsteel november last year. Generally I dislike Rock slide guitar, all that skreeching and skrawing with the hopes of hitting the right note. My version of slide sounded more like a dobro I so I bought a Morrell lapsteel 8 string from Chuck Brattian. One of the nices...
