Mr.Baecker: My question was not rhetorical. I am positioned to see things differently from (probably) anyone else on this forum: I'm a non-musician, a non-player. I won't go into the details of how I ended up here. Too many words for a forum such as this. But-- suffice it to say that I'm on the outs...

Mr. Baecker: Do you and Sage see the steel guitar as an obscure instrument with a very narrow customer potential (as I do)? If so, do you have any plans to widen the market?

Need part for my Champ

If anyone has, or knows anyone who has a chrome bridge cover for my 50's Fender Champ I'd sure like to buy it.

Okay. If I understand correctly it would not be a dobro or resonator in the popular sense of the word because it relies on bringing the string in contact with the fret board.

Follow up question (from Dobro question)

Thanks everyone. Now that I know that the "Do" bros made resonator guitars I'm wondering just where it all began. I realize it can get real cloudy as to just where and when anything actually came into being. After all David (the giant killer) had a stringed instrument. But-- as this newbie...

Air gap question

I have a 50's Fender Champ. Six strings. One pickup. How much distance should be between the pickup and the strings?

Slide" guitar. What's that?

Is it just another name for a lap steel or is it an entirely different instrument? Is it a dobro? Someone ought to put together a glossary for newby's like me.

What about the Harmos

I'm very new to the forum. This may have been covered before but maybe your views have too. What impact do you think will be had from the introduction of the Harpos lap steel guitar? Could it bring new interest to the lap g'tar as a first instrument?

Took the words right out of my mouth. Ha! Seriously though- that technology is relative to the field I'm in. Lung "behavior" is controlled by two characteristics known as compliance and elastance. The latter would be conducive to sustain (if I've thought it out properly). -----------------...

Sorry to say I don't play anything at all. Just have the burning desire. Somebody mentioned Jeff Newman. I click on this memorial site over and over to listen to his tribute to Jimmy Day (believe that's right). It's the only steel guitar music I know of that I can click on and listen to. Each time I...

This is a great collection of responses that took time from each of you. But... you guys are not doing a thing to allay my fears that an instrument with all those pedals and levers not to mention the strings themselves would be all but impossible for a guy who can't pat his head and rub his stomach ...

"Probably as many different numbers of pedals and combinations as there are PSG players."
If I went to a steel guitar showroom and asked to see the least expensive model they had- how many pedals would it have? Or do they make each guitar differently?

Need some help with terminology

I know what a pedal steel is. I know what a lap steel is. They're both guitars. But if you ask the average Joe to hand you a guitar they're gonna hand you one like Eric Clapton plays. If I actually want one like Clapton plays-- what should I ask for? I've been using the term "regular" but ...

Might have to go it alone

If there's anyone in this town who teaches steel they're well hidden. A few years ago I went looking for a lap steel. You'd think the music store operators didn't know there was such a thing let alone who might teach me. So I'm probably gonna have to order my picks and bar and rely on tab to teach m...

What is Sustain?

I suspect it's the ability of the steel to cause a note to seem to last, to hang in the air so to speak. But since I don't really know, I'm asking. If I'm right- what do you do to increase the sustain?

"In my opinbion, the main thing to keep in mind as you start up that ladder of musical training is as follows: If you want to play any instrument but don't enjoy the actual learning process, you will never make it. You must be able to get a thrill every time you learn even the smallest new thin...

I just bought one. My assumption was that it would be a logical place to start to learn steel. If, by some miracle, I develop some skill at it I can move up to a pedal. But... maybe it doesn't work that way. Am I wrong? Isn't a lap steel a good place to begin learning? Or is it a totally different a...

Guitar ordered by what about a bar?

As previously mentioned- I took lessons in the fifties. I remember I had a black tapered bar. I can see on the forum that others have asked about it too (Black Rajah). I had it because my teacher said "Here. You need this. Your dad owes me two bucks (or whatever)." It's long gone and I hav...

...I've got tons of questions. This is my first post. I bought a guitar on ebay last night and there's no telling when I'll actually have it in my hands. So I don't even have one to look at. I'm 58 y/o. I took steel lessons for a few months when I was 14 or 15 y/o. At the time steel was not cool (ex...
