Steve Fishell’s terrific book on Buddy Emmons reminded me of the time Buddy inadvertently landed me an interview with one of my all-time favourite bands. Back in the mid-seventies, when I was a rookie steel player and host of a music/interview show on CBC-Radio in Ottawa, I drove to Nashville to rec...

John, Unfortunately, that interview disappeared long ago. It's been 43 years, but one thing I recall about our conversation was that when I asked Buddy to rate other steel players, he offered that Pete Drake was "the luckiest player in Nashville." It seems that he wasn't all that impressed...

Russell and Buddy

Russell and Buddy Emmons were two of my big musical influences, and once upon a time I had the good fortune to bring them together. In 1977, I was a fledgling steel player and free-lance broadcaster, travelling through Tennessee, interviewing some of my favorite musicians for a radio show I hosted o...

Bryan had a reputation as was one of the best technicians in the business. Here's a section from his obituary, February 2013: "[Bryan] was a world class steel guitar player and worked with such names as Little Jimmy Dickens, David Houston, Claude Gray and Ava Barber among others. He also did a ...

1970 Emmons Black Fatback PP 8X7

This fatback push-pull #1479-D was rebuilt by the late Bryan Adams and previously owned by Tommy Detamore. I purchased the guitar from Tommy in January, 2016, but now, unfortunately, I’m obliged to sell it. The gloss black mica and aluminum are in excellent condition. The guitar is currently set u...

Thanks to Tom Bradshaw

A belated thank-you to Tom Bradshaw for his kindness and generosity toward us when the Grievous Angel show was on tour of California last month. Our steel player, Al Bragg, needed an amp and Tom LOANED us one of his 12" Webbs, which sounded like a million bucks with Al's '67 Emmons. Thanks agai...

Grievous Angel: The Legend of Gram Parsons in Northern Cal.

Bob,
Yes, I remember that Kingston gig really well. Ian Tamblyn did his folk-rock thing, the drummer figured he was Billy Cobham, the bassist went all Jaco Pastorius, and I pretended to be Buddy Emmons. Train wreck!
But something good came of it--you got yourself a great guitar!
cheers,
m

Grievous Angel: The Legend of Gram Parsons in Northern Cal.

At the risk of blowing our own horns, here's a review we got for the show in Montreal last week: Grievous Angel: The Legend of Gram Parsons is a triumph from its first moment to its last...Anders Drerup as Gram [conveys] a real sense of the singer's fears and hopes....The inspired selection of songs...

Hi Jim,

Thanks.
Yes, I'm putting together an East Coast tour for early spring. We will be in Tennessee/South Carolina/Florida in February (avoiding the Canadian winter). I'll keep you posted.

Good catch! That's John on a double-neck in the first shot, then Al (in Sweetheart of the Rodeo T-shirt) playing his single-neck.
