Wow, I'm not familiar with a Hank version! I really only know (and LOVE) the Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys version. Now I have to sift through my mound of records and cds to hunt this down...

Al: you're absolutely right. After a little bit more research I found that Leon Seago is the vocalist on "Born to Lose". I just ass/u/me/d that Ted was the singer. Arrgh! Sorry guys! I guess this could change to "any singer slash steel players" out there?

JB and Hank Moanin'

Is that incredible solo on 'Honky-Tonkin'" that Jerry Byrd does... that moan as the steel break begins... is THAT the famous Ricky moan that gets discussed so much here? I love JBs playing on this song so much. I'm going to check the tabs section just in case....

Thanks!

Ted Daffan's Texans

I've been getting really into these guys lately and have wondered if anyone has any firsthand experience of them "back in the day". Ted plays the steel on his recordings. I've been listening to his big hit "Born to Lose" and there's a great steel intro... then some sung verses......

Just being a 'devil's advocate' here; but when you extend this discussion to include the terminology variants (or etymological shifts) of other instruments, for instance of "violin" to "fiddle", etc. you would go crazy! Every fiddler I know would say s/he plays "Irish",...

You're right, Mark! And Gene, even if we go by a style as a prefix, i.e. Hawaiian steel, Western steel, Sacred steel, etc., we have to look at it and go, "Well, they're ALL playing steel guitars!"...

I'm not sure if that helps...

I didn't mean to imply that Hawaiian and acoustic steel music wasn't popular before the 40s, Tim. I meant to say that the synthesis you mentioned via Western Swing became "more than the sum of its parts" by then. Why continue calling an instrument by a name that only denotes one of its asp...

It seems to me that the steel guitar that we *now* know became identifiable or unique from the 40s on. To my understanding and ears it is a unique synthesis of Hawaiian slide, bottleneck blues, jazz, and folk (hillbilly) styles. And although each player's tastes and techniques might favor one of the...

Thanks for the replies, guys! I just received this from my friend Ken Hippler who runs a great internet radio show at live365.com called "Vintage Country" where I heard the Hawkins' record:    "This Hawkshaw Hawkins recording was done in Cincinnati February 1949, and that IS Jerry Byr...

Hawkshaw Hawkins' Steel Player?

I just heard Hawkshaw Hawkins' "The Longer We're Together (The More We Drift Apart)" and really dug the steel part. It sounds to my (still learning) ears like Jerry Byrds's playing, especially the vibrato... but I don't want to step on anybody's toes! Can anybody help me out here? Regards,...

A Thousand Dollar Question

First of all, I'd like to say hello and thank you to you all. I've been a 'voyeur' on the Forum for quite some time and have learned so very much. The Forum has helped me immensely on my path of playing and learning the "lap" steel guitar. Though I've only been playing a few months, it see...
