Automatics....we called 'em SLUSHBOXES back in the 60's when muscle cars and 4-on-the-floor were king. I was fortunate enough to learn to drive in the only stick-shift driver training car in SLC--a '62 Chevy Bel-Air with a 283 and 3 on the tree.(all the others were Ford Falcons with slushers and 6-b...

I used to have my Alesis QS6.1 set on a stand above my steel, and that worked pretty well, but, being the Hammond/Leslie nut I am, I built a single manual B3 chop for stage use, and set it in an "L" configuration with the steel facing forward. I use a drummers' throne, so swiveling around ...

Yeah, beware o' them 'NOODLERS'...you know, the guys who practice their 'licks' between songs, during THEIR solos, during YOUR solos, and during vocals! One band I was in had two guitar players, one of which was THE NOODLER, and I was on steel. Solos became a big cluster**** because of U-know-who. A...

I recently found a 'Line Tamer' 120 V isolation xfmr at a local thrift store for $5. It's a fairly heavy (of course...it's just a big 1:1 TRANSFORMER), and it's not big enough to run the whole PA through (only 700 VA) but for a steel or guitar amp, it eliminates hum due to 'DIRTY' power at the wall ...

Being the sentimental FOOOL I am, i tend to choke up all too often when I hear something real purty. I can't recall playing anything that made me cry for the above reason. I HAVE seen people cry when I play, and I'd like to think it was because they were touched by it, and not for the same reason do...

I just got an e-mail from Big Mo Records saying that there were 2 typos on the CD:
Track #5 is really "song of India", and #10 is
really "Melancholy Serenade."
I THOUGHT that last song sounded kinda
Jackie Gleason-ish!

I got my copy a few days ago. I've also had RJE for quite a while. IMO, RJE kicks butt! I've only heard FUNHOUSE thru a set of headphones so far, and the recording quality seemed a litle distorted (prolly should give it another listen over some REAL speakers before I say anything), but (yeah, I KNOW...

How about mounting a Leslie half-moon switch on yer steel to switch between speeds?
Now THAT would freak out the Hammond affectionados!!
.......Nah.
Steels are much taller than the front rail of a B3.
(another bad idea bites the dust)

Tho' I've never tried a steel thru one, I'll bet a Dynacord CLS-222 (1 rack space) would
sound pretty close. They sound pretty genuine with a Hammond! I've seen them on the BAY for around $200-300.

The best(stand alone) Leslie sim I have ever heard is the CLS-222 made by Dynacord. I heard a dude playing a Hammond XK-2 thru what I could've SWORN was a 122/147 , but couldn't see one . I can usually tell a 'sim' right away, because there are so many sonic nuances coming from the horn, it's really...

I have been using a Digitech TSR-24s thru my PA (steel input to channel, stereo sends/ returns in FX loop) using the BIG BRITE REVERB factory patch. I've had several players play on my steel ['79 Emmons D-10 p-p], and just go gah-gah over how BIG it sounds..It's hard to tell from up on stage, but wh...

I've noticed quite a similarity in Buddy Emmons' comping style and that of jazz organ players like Joey De Francesco, Jimmy Smith, Jack Mc Duff, (et.al.) They know all those nice FAT chords, do a lot of quick horn-like
'stabs', things like that.

"SWIPES" on a STEEL!!! That's a good one!! Can you emulate the Hammond percussion with it? How about the c-3 chorus/vibrato? I'd LOVE to hear somebody do some good 'squabbling' on a steel!!! Man, if I could do all THAT with technique and effects on a steel, who neez all them Hammints? I co...

The Leslie speaker was invented by Don Leslie between 1937-40, when he was disappointed with the static (boring) sound of the Hammond organ he'd just purchased. (They didn't have vibrato yet- only 'tremulant'-volume variation.. (like what older guitar amps mistakenly call 'vibrato'.) His goal was to...

Those motors are all over ebay, even the 2-speed motor stacks. Also, check local thrift stores/yard sales for spinet organs with internal Leslies..usually under $20 for the whole organ, the rest which (when the Leslie module is removed), is usually just 'dumpster food' anyway.

The 122 family of Leslies (31 series, 21 series, 122/142/222) were originally made specifically for use with Hammond organs, and there were no provisions for interfacing them with 1/4" inputs. There are now stomp-box type preamps that will work with most any Leslie. The Trek II Uc-1A is one. Th...

Long time lurker, first time poster... Back when I was just learning pedal steel, the only amp I HAD was a Leslie 145 (shorter version of a 147) with a combo pre-amp, so me and my MSA (D-10 8/4) WERE the organ on the rock & roll songs we played. Recently I built a single-manual B3 organ that I u...
