I used to play with Dave, and I'd just like to say that you couldn't find a nicer, more down to earth guy in the world. An incredible talent, and you're sure to hear more about the guy in the future. Ward

Same problem, and I've got the same question... I'm playing a ShoBud professional. The only time I use the vertical lever (right now) is with the A&B pedals down for a 7th chord doing Mooney type licks (Swingin Doors, etc.). I've got my pedals down and my heel way in the air, takes a lot of effo...

I think the most important part of steel is to always play with a reference, a band backing you up. Band in the Box works for me, but many people sell CD's with various songs on them that would work just fine. It's much easier to see how licks and runs fit when you're playing over actual changes, as...

Ditto on the Range out of Plano Texas...

For those of you with Windows Media Player, just go to the radio section, and its one of those presets...just look for the Plano Texas label. Best radio I've heard. Ward

Just some input from a beginner here. When I first started playing, I was trying to use and learn licks using every single pedal on my steel. After a short time, I found that I really wasn't learning anything and was getting really confused. I then decided to form an approach to learning based on on...

So this thread has inspired me to make a real effort to learn my chords in every position. What I've done is set my band in a box to the following progression. I-iim-iiim-IV-V-vim-viidim-I The only problem is the diminished chord. Is this right in the harmonized scale? The chord doesn't sound right ...

tape to CD using my computer

I've got some great instructional material I've just bought, but only with a cassette tape as oppossed to a CD. I'd like to transform them into CD's using my computer and want to know the best way to go about this. Thanks, Ward

Simple Bob Wills for C6

I'm looking for simple tabs for any Bob Wills songs for the C6 neck. San Antonio Rose, Home in San Antone, anything really. I'm specifically looking for the melody lines. Does anyone have any they want to share, or know of any good sources? Thanks, Ward

Can't help you with the tab, but I'm positive that's Mike Dailey, from the Ace in the Hole Band. Its a demo recording written by George himself that's not on any album, but included on the box set. Ward

I went ahead to Scotty's today and picked up Buddy Emmons' course. Really infomative, and has songs I like. I'm going to get through it and then pick up Herbie Wallace's book.

It's hard to bite the bullet and shell out $100 for a video (Up From the Top), but I've got to admit I can now work my way around chord progressions a bit, and I'm starting to develop my own licks. Worth it I suppose.

Nathan, I was just going to add that my teacher Don Curtis, has a C6 on E9 book available. I haven't looked at it yet, but he's showed me a few things revolving around lowering the e's that have been really cool. Since lowering the E's essentially puts a B6 tuned lap steel in front of you, don't for...

Jeff Newman is a great instructer. I've gotten a lot better since I got his Up From the Top A&B pedal dvd. The up from the top method makes sense to me. Start with the A&B pedals, move onto the L lever, then the R. Pricey stuff, but that's what I'm gonna go with in E9. I think I'm also going...

That's interesting that you picked "So Much Like My Dad" Buddy. Your playing was amazing on that cut and really showed how much you enjoyed it. I've always thought that was one of the most beautiful country songs I've ever heard.

Favorite C6 instruction courses

Just wanted to know what some of people's favorite C6 instruciton courses are. I've been playing the E9 neck for 6 months, and am gettting a D-10 this week. I like Western Swing a lot and would like a course geared to this style. Thanks, Ward

Steel Guitar Compilations

I was wondering if there is a compilation CD out there with original versions of famous steel songs, i.e Bud's Bounce, Steel Guitar Rag, ect. Second best would be a compilation of these songs by artists other than the original. Thanks for your help. Ward

Respectfully disagree, I have found the steel instruction to be top notch. Don Curtis is a heckuva instructor and guy. I also have the up from the top series from Jeff Newmann, which explains the AB pedals in extensive detail. These two factors have improved my playing exponentially. I never had a t...

Open Position licks

I have a problem improvising when I get to the open (no pedal) position of a chord. I do a couple of feeble things, and that's it, boring. Can anyone show me a few licks, especially ones that utilize the A&B pedals in the open position? Any help would be appreciated. Ward

Hi Alvin, One thing that I would recommend that you do is to hire the services a valuation expert to place a legitimate vaue on your instruments. A written letter signed by a steel guitar expert would go a long way to prove the worth of your instruments. I wouldn't rely on any valuations by an insur...
