I love listening to funk. Particularly Eddie Bo's productions with James Black playing the drums .... "Hook & Sling" "Hip Drop" "Humpty Dump" ... great New Orleans grooves from the '70's. Nowdays there some great funk being played by 'Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings'...

A good read.....makes me wonder why more steel players don't listen to Albert Ayler on the way to the gig? .....Wonderful! (Though I hope it was the geography, not the music that brought about the grim recollections).
[Thi...

I think the first three would be:

Ionian
Mixolydian
Dorian

I'm not sure of the 4th one.

Sneaky Pete is the cat's meow! Seems only right that he should be in the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame.

Brendan - again, those "old tunes" are (I assume) meant to be familiar to the player, but are not anymore and have lost their relevancy. Jim S. - With all due respect, everbody's perspective is a bit different. I think relevant is perhaps .... relative. I was only familiar with a few of t...

I'm a beginner at steel guitar, I think the old tunes in those old books work just fine for examples of the basic principles. It's probably a lot more than guys like Mooney, Brumley and Sneaky Pete.... or any one else from a generation or two ago had to start with. Sometimes it's easy to overlook t...

The Mu-tron C-200 does volume, wha and volume/wha together. There is a separate switch for each function as well as a trim pot on the side to adjust the overall volume. It uses a light sensor instead of a pot and takes 120 AC for power. Out of production so it's hard to find them nowdays, especially...

It's like a musical documentary of how big money interests win against the interests of homeowners and residents in the game of civic planning in mid-century Los Angeles. .....Progress? ... for whom? I think it's a great album, not only for the music, but for the message it conveys. After hearing it...

Charlie Patton is one of my all time favorites ... not only his voice, but that same spirit comes through in his guitar playing... powerful! One inexpensive possibility for portable recording in stereo (not multi-tracking)might be a mini-disc recorder. No longer marketed much in the US, they can be found on ebay for about $100 more or less. Those made by Sharp are often preferred for live recording because they allow adjustment of the mi...

Not big band but.....Ry Cooder has been playing steel with some Afro-Cuban artists. I saw him live with the Buena Vista Social Club back in the 90's.
He also plays some cool retro Afro-Cuban pop oriented type stuff on an album with Manuel Galban called Mambo Sinuendo.

I have a casstte tape titled "R.K. Instrumental VOL.1" "ON ELECTRIC HAWAIIAN GUITAR" I think it is music for Indian film soundtracks, some of the arrangements seem almost western in structure, the embellishments on the melody and percussions sound very Indian.....very cool stuff!...

I never really even played guitar before, just drums. I have to learn to keep my right foot from tapping in time, or else I get a very choppy tremolo from the volume pedal!
