The last time I had a JBL D120F re-coned by authorized JBL service center, I was informed the only JBL kits available were the "E" series. Price for 120 and 130 speakers was around $279 each. The places that re-cone JBL speakers for $100 are using after market kits. My experience is if it ...

I have to agree with Will Cowell. A vacuum tube is a linear amplifying device. It reproduces what is applied. I've never heard of tubes having scooped mid-range. A scooped sound is a result of components. I've been playing for 55 years and have never heard anything described by Tim Marcus, but that ...

I have an Evans AE-100 I bought from John Hughy. After experiencing intermittent distortion, I found coupling cap on reverb board was broken at the board. Easiest check is replace rectifier, then check B+ voltages. If it still blows fuse, a shorted tube, capacitor or OT COULD be problem. Remove all tubes except 5AR4. If it still blows fuse, I suspect a shorted filter cap although it could be something else.

Instead of buying a high price piece of equipment, I have used the following method to check bias setting for Fender Twin Reverb. Buy precision one ohm one watt resistors and solder them between the cathode and ground in each of the 6l6GC tube circuits. The reading you get when measuring the voltage...

I play my Gretsch 6120 through an Evans AE100 with external JBL G125 speaker. I have had no problem getting the sound I had when I used a Twin Reverb w/JBL speakers. If I was in the market for a new amp, I would get the Evans RE200. There is a forum member who doesn't like Evans and has posted his d...

One main difference between silicon and germanium transistors is: The emitter base voltage for germanium is approx. 0.2VDC and the emitter base voltage for silicon is 0.7VDC. If you sub a silicon transistor for a germanium transistor, you need to re-design the circuit. Biasing will change. I don't b...

Mouser Electronics has the chips. You can look at their catalog for prices. I would replace those 4558's with the 2134 chips. I replace the 4558 chips in my Bandit 65 with the OPA2134' with no problems.

I would buy one tube made by the same mfg. as the other
el84's. Check that it isn't glowing cherry red after you plug in the new tube. If it sounded good before you broke the tube, it will probably sound good after replacement. I wouldn't replace all tubes just because I broke one.

David, the value of the cap should be 22 mfd, not 0.22. It's sole purpose is to keep the bias voltage constant.

The resistor is there to provide bias for the tube(called cathode self bias). The cap (cathode bypass cap) keeps the voltage constant across the resistor. if you remove the cap, degeneration is introduced which lowers the tube gain and improve fidelity. if you remove the resistor, then there is no b...
