Contact cleaner and rotate the potsmillion times?? Usually works. Maybe some compressed air to get the biggest share out first. I could be wrong, but, in the things I've done it works.

I think it's practice and experience. I've played bass for 25+ years, and when I learn a song , I almost always listen to the bass for changes.
