Jerry Byrd Fan Club

Hi Ray - That selection by Jerry Byrd & Bill Lincoln is fron one of my favorite albums by Jerry -- " HULA IN FALSETTO ". This was one of the first albums Jerry recorded when moving to Hawaii in 1972. Another favorite, around the same time, is " MAI POINA 'OE IA'U " with Gary...

C6th Discussion

Ron, I had no problem bringing up the JB playing Steel at the Renfro Valley Barn Dance. I used to listen to them on the Radio when I was a kid -- or maybe younger than now.

Thanks Ray for posting.

To all concerned on the origin of the C6th tuning: Referring to Jerry Byrd's autobiography "It Was A Trip On Wings Of Music" Jerry discusses the evolution of the tunings for the Steel Guitar and how he arrived at the C6th tuning. If you don't have a copy of Jerry's book, I'm sure you can g...

Young Steel Player --- Even Tom

Don, I never heard of him but he is an inspiration to a lot of young steel players. Let's hope he continues his playing, learning and studying. Where was this, Hawaii, California, Japan, etc. The only negative, I think the sound engineers didn't do him justice. Perhaps, Kamaka might know of him. War...

Hawaiian Steel Guitar - Waikiki

Don and Ron and all -- Well said ! ! I also think that what brought many of us to the Hawaiian Steel Guitar and Hawaii where it all began was (1) The "Hawaii Calls Radio Program" (2) The many "Webley Edwards Hawaii Calls Records" (3) The many "Hawaiian Steel Guitar Virtuosos...

Ho'olau'lea - Ali Wai !!

8) Kay, An excellent thread and interesting side issues. IMO, the Ho'olau'lea was one of the hi-lites of the convention with a few exceptions. I, too, on arriving at the golf course wondered why so few chairs were set up and was informed that there was no public info delivered for the event, as a re...

Ron, Sonny Nicholas is on bass, George Piltz on guitar, Godfrey on uke and Danny Stewart on Steel-- I also saw Sonny at the Kapiolani in 1989 where he was in his last days -- it was a pathetic ending for a great Hawaiian Entertainer. The above mentioned CD's/LP's are excellent memories of Sonny. War...

[/quote][/b] Hi Jeff, with Alan's Kamehaha Talent coming forth, perhaps the Waikiki Hotels will be staging more Hawaiian Steel than presently there. Gerald's Ross's The Gypsy

Yes Gerald you did a superb job on that one -- it's nice to hear the songs prior to Hip Hop, Rap, CrapRock & Roll, etc.  You know what I mean -- selectively some were fair.  But what I am getting at is that we need more revival of the that generation of songs.  Yes, I recall "The Gypsy"...

Bas, yes Jerry's autobiography does state "My father was English", however it is on Page 13. Your quote is correct. I recall at a convention in Joliet (maybe '88 or later) when Jerry was there and the same year that he announced that he was going to retire from regular scheduled gigs at t...
