I use an FYD octal preamp direct sometimes and it works well. Also any of Sarno Music Solutions preamps would work well I suspect.

Steel Players in London

Will be in London Sept 18-22 and wondering if there are any steel players to catch. Or any other Steel related things I should be aware of.

Love playing the steel unconventionally. It is a challenge for sure in rhythm mode because there is so much to go wrong in that there are lots of notes that you don't want to ring. Anyway I think the second POCO record "Poco" has what is still some of the most innovative steel playing. Alw...

Writing a will

Planning a big trip and trying to take care of my will before hand. No one in my family plays steel and I wonder if anyone knows of an organization that helps out young financially limited players. I'd love for my two steels to end up with some talented young players that might not be able to afford...

Yes it would. I didn't like it too much for steel before putting that in. I also don't like the reverb too much, I pedals for that, mostly delay.

I have one and like it quite a bit. It did take a Eminence Travis Toy 12" speaker to be viable for steel at lower volume or for rocking out. Not much head room. I'll include a link of a show where I use it. Just the amo into the room not mic'd. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgOdnQXTw7A https:...

I have a Freeze pedal and really liked it at first, but then it got wiggy and started adding some undesirable sounds. It changes the tone quite a bit particularly in the mode where you have a drone and want to play over it. So maybe this Plus Pedal has solved some of those problems. The concept is g...

I play with a fella that is very good and a great song writer but can play super loud though with lots of dynamics. Still it has been a long learning curve to figure out how to play loud and not loud at the same time. I wear really expensive ear plugs often. It is fun but I do lose the clean bell qu...

Christopher Templeton - The Tapper

I'm embarrassed that it took me this long to do this because I got Christopher Templeton's The Tapper a long time ago and have always meant to proclaim publicly how great it is. Full of all kinds of steel styles perfectly executed. Great stories and writing. The musicians are all great, and that is ...

I too have been using the Shure SE215. Pretty darn inexpensive and it has worked well with a very loud band. It is odd to be sort of isolated in that you can't hear your band mates talking really. Also I find it is really dependent on the sound guy. if they aren't the sort to pay attention I don't g...

FYD makes a good Pre with an Octal tube. It is hand wired and priced accordingly. The Sarno V8 I'm sure is excellent as are the Walker Stereo Steel Pres. The Preamp is super important and not a good piece to skimp on. The Preamps mentioned above are all built by guys that give a damn and are fairly ...
