Good input. I really couldn't tell the difference either. And I am assuming that it will be even more difficult when I am actually playing with the rest of the group.

The slippage comment is interesting. I will definitely check that out.

Thanx,
Fred

Ah, that all makes a lot of sense. I forgot about bottle neck. I really like that index fingerpick thingy. That is a great idea. I am tired of trying to do a brush and launching a pick across the room. And I could see how much simpler it would make it when I make my switch to my Tele also. I have al...

Thanx, gents for your feedback. It was helpful.

Now, John, that pic is begging for an explanation. The axe, the fingerpick in the front, no thumbpick?, why that bar? I am curious. And I would like to hear something from this setup.

brass vs. nickel finger picks

Curious why I would pick one over the other. I have always used nickel. Didn't even know brass existed. Then I dropped one of my finger picks between the slats of a deck. And it disappeared in the nether. Looking around, I discovered brass picks. Just curious why I would pick one over the other. For...

Gents,
Thanks for the help. I'm gonna go out and get some strings and try both tunings and the plain 4th string also. I'm guessing I should add on a few points for the longer Tonemaster scale (~26") ...ie: E = .034 => .036.
Thanks again,

6 string tunings and gauges

It's been a real long while since I have been here. But got fired up the other night after watching a pedal player at a local place here in Austin. So I decided to put a better effort into my lap steel playing, especially other tunings. Currently I have my old Dickerson student model and my Oahu Ton...

Erv,
I love this song. It's on the second Nitty Gritty "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" album. Sounds great. I would like a copy also.

I don't get much time to check the page and less time to respond. But I could not let this one get by.
Thanks,
Fred

I get the digest from the BlueGrassDobro board. And there has been some discussion htere about the Black Lightning's. I don't know how accurate it is. But it seems that there has been an unusually high incidence of the neck separating from the body. Again, not sure how accurate. Just something to th...

mandolin help

I know this is not the right place to post this. But I don't where else to turn. I am starting to look for a good mandolin for folk/Celtic style, mostly for support during worship service at church. I will be a total newbie. So any help would br appreciated...info, mandolin discussion board, anythin...

live365

Live365 is the easiest way to do it. Plus you can establish a list of preferences and just select from the list. I like to listen to Old Time Radio (Shadow, Mystery Traveler, etc) also. So I have those stations and SteelRadio in the preferences list. Real easy. And the Live365 player works just fine...

House of the Rising Sun - reso tuning

Looking for tab or links for this song in the standard 6 string G reso tuning. Will take any tuning, but prefer G. Saw Blind Boys of Alabama on Austin city Limits do Amazing Grace to the music of this song. And it was great. David Lindley sat in and played lap steel on it. So that made it even bette...

55 going on 30. Just picked up a TUT Tennessean last Fall and loving every minute of it. I have a little bit (very little bit) of electric and acoustic guitar experience. And that helped. But if you are enjoying it and can put in a bit of time, you can learn it. Have fun!

One I haven't heard mentioned yet and deserves mention is the LapDawg. I had Stevens and came across the LapDawg and like it head shoulders above the Stevens. It was ~$15. So it was well worth the try.

Lee, That was great!!! It was pretty easy to follow ...and I'm a newbie. It sounded great with my Oahu Tonemaster thru my SF Princeton Reverb ...a liitle reverb and vibrato and a lot of volume pedal. My wifey walked thru and said ..."Wow, sounds like an organ". Great tab. I will try to use...

Can anyone describe what is meant by "punch"? Or a link to examples? I'm not sure I know what it is. But I'd bet I want some. Now remember I'm a newbie. So go gentle with me.

Gosh, Scott those basses are the goofiest, dangdest things I've seen. I really like the idea. Once you've seen it, you wonder why you didn't think of it yourself. Built-in intonation, cool idea.

I thought the same exact thing. But as I watched I noticed that it was the Str@t (I think) player and he just rotated his guitar to play slide. He even kept the slide on on one of the tuning pegs when he wasn't using it. It's rare you see slide player play like that. I wondered about his tuning.

Last Fall, I bought a Crafter's Tennessean (model TTT like Mikey's). And I love it to death. I am a total newbie. So I had Erik Waynesmith look at it while he was in Austin for the Austin ResoFest. He gave it all kinds of praise ...one of the best he'd seen. I think they're great.
