Definitely a refin. Kind of a light natural color. Like so: https://bb.steelguitarforum.com/userpix2203/2956_IMG_20230311_113323102_1.jpg I was curious about exact date of this steel. Described as "50s". Popped the near neck tuning plate. Sure enough. 10/56 in a blueish sort of pencil mark...

Stephen:

Thanks for chiming in. I'd forgotten about that decal. There is one on this D8, but it's smaller than the decals I'm seeing in non-refin examples. So yes, has to be a refin. Not a bad job either, just not original.

Natural finish Stringmaster?

I've seen many stringmasters with yellow paint. Considering one now, a double neck from the 50s, which has what looks like lacquered or varnish finish, natural wood color.

Did any Stringmasters come that way from the factory, or am I looking at a refinished steel?

Thanks!

These also have one of the smoothest, best-feeling trems. The JS390 is a great guitar.

I'm not hugely experienced at steel playing with my Allen Encore, so could be very wrong about this. But I did play an 8 string lap through it often at home. Never even occurred to me to vary the ohm setting. The Encore is so easily voiced for different volumes and guitar character just via the regu...

Allen Encore

Greg: My Encore is a head. Kit built before David Allen even marketed kits. Guy bought the schematic and all parts from David, had the head shell built. (It was tech enthusiasm like this that got David into the kit business I suspect.) Anyway, had it for more than 10 years. Mine came with the stock ...

Started for me with a fondness for Hawaiian sounds and classic country even as kid. Didn't know exactly what I was hearing, though now I know steel was always in the mix. What got me to try doing lap style was playing slide and open tunings on regular guitar. I kept hearing things that were sort of ...

Aluminum Clinesmith 8-string for sure. Also some thing old with a P-90. Maybe a Gibson Century?? And from the more modest side of the lap steel tracks, I'd love to find a really healthy supro studio or similar ... don't care about looks so much if it has that sound.

I've not used it for lap ... had good luck with Emi Copperheads. Nice balance, nice drive. By comparison, the Ragin Cajin always struck me as too hard, too loud and too bassy. My favorite of all the 10" ceramics is the WGS G10C. Had the equivalent WGS model in 12" and 15" sizes also. ...

FS: Tweed Bassman in NJ

It's a replica made by a guy named Sterling in MA. Made very well, fully the equal in parts, build quality and sound as examples from Victoria and Clark. http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t150/mad_dog_pix/Stirling%20tweed%20bassman/Sterlingbassman1_zps205d9ba9.jpg Here are other pics from the previ...

Very late to this party. Such cool sounds. Dove into other jazz clips of yours. Such as the outstanding "Poinciana". And "Straight No Chaser" (I think that's the one.)

Wonderful music. Is this the short or longscale version of the Clinesmith aluminum steel?
