Smiley....I'll bet this is the Lois Johnson who sang on WNOX in Knoxville? In the late 50's Lowell Blanchard, host of the noontime and Sat. night radio show, was looking for a replacement for Don Gibson, who Chet had finally convinced to make the move to Nashville. I rode up from Chatt. with Kirk Ha...

Do any of you remember the Phillip Morris tour that Carl headlined? I got to meet the little guy in the bellhop suit who was famous for his "CALL FOR PHILLIP MORRIS' routine on the old cigarett comercials. He would come out and do his thing before bringing Carl on.

Sure wish we'd had tuners back when I used to work the joints where they wouldn't turn off the jukebox 'til the last minute. The best we ever sounded was the 4 or 5 years Norman Blake played fiddle, he tuned every instrument including the pedal steel! Talk about perfect pitch, he had it!

I don't have his address or phone # but a friend does. Try this........... DownhomeP@aol.com Tom is still performing, although his wife and musical partner passed away a few years ago. In fact, there was a story in the Chatt. paper this past week about an upcoming date at the Smithsonian.(sp?) He al...

Touching Bass

I know this is a steel forum but there seems to be several bass players, or players who double on bass, out there. As an old fart whose been playing bass since the late 50's, I'm curious as to what kind of old jewels you've got laying around. And no, I'm not coming to your house. http://steelguitarf...

Where is he now?

Here's another "picker from the past" I'd like to ask about. When I was playing with Buck Turner's Town & Country Boys around the Chattanooga area throughout the 60's we had two good steel players. One was Herby Wallace....well, ya'll have probably heard of him. http://steelguitarforum...

Leon Sutton

Anyone know where he is now? As a teenager, sneaking into the honkytonks around Chattanooga in the 50's, he was my favorite lead guitar player. He was a fast and clean player, a cut above the rest of the locals at that time. Around 56-57 he made the move to Nashville and caught on with Hawkshaw Hawk...

Now there's a name from the past! Moss Sanders and I backed him on several shows around this area in the late 50's-early 60's.
He once gained national attention by pushing a wheelbarrow full of his records from Chattanooga to Nashville during the DJ Convention week.

Good song! We still do it and it always works. If they don't get up and dance, better check their pulse. http://steelguitarforum.com/wink.gif Seems like Don Gibson had it on an early album, although I can't remember if he used a steel. One of those old standards that will be around as long as there ...

I've been reading this forum for several months but this is my first post. I remember backing Autry, on bass, at a schoolhouse auditorium show in '58 or '59, near Chattanooga. We hung out some and he impressed me with his lack of ego, unusual then as now, and his honesty. When I complimented him on ...
