Early 80's in Emporia Kansas at "The Palace". This place had no bouncer. If a fight broke out it would just continue till it stopped on it's own. Made you think twice before you got involved in one, because nobody was there to stop it.

Fantastic! Stay with the steel guitar, by all means. You played "around the melody" very tastefully, and that is a gift. You have a great touch, which translates into great tone. You are doing all the right things. Keep it up!

Not impressed. I've been doing that since 1968. Everything from Hendrix to the "James Gang" to "Boston" to Johnny Winter (my favorite). With a little technique and attenton to phrasing, the PSG can easily emmulate an electric rock guitar. RR presents nothing new here for me other...

I bought a George Jones album in 1963 when I was 10 years old so I could learn the instrumental "Jonesy" which featured Hal Rugg. I don't have it any more, but some of the other songs were "Ragged But Right", "She's Lonesome Again", and another instrumental by Hal calle...

If a Push Pull is the 'Be all - End all' of PSG tone (and I agree that, in the right hands, there is something magical about them) why aren't they still being produced? Someone with the knowledge, know-how, expertise, and "ear" should be designing a new run of PP's. Bobbe, are you listenin...

Here's what I did about 23 years ago to solve this problem once and for all! I played at Scotty's convention in St Louis in front of a packed auditorium on ameteur night. The audience was full of great pickers as well as idols like BE and Jimmy Day. Of course I wanted to play well, but my main purpo...

Has anyone ever listened to that old Ralph Emory song "Touch of the Master's Hand"? When I listen to someone play steel, I am listening for what the person imparts to the instrument. Bobbe, I'm sure that you or Emmons or any great player could play "Danny Boy" on a single string ...

Rock Around The Clock

I watched an old rerun of the Ed Sullivan show on PBS the other night. Featured were Bill Haley and the Comets playing "Rock Around the Clock". Lo and behold, one of the "Comets" was a steeler comping chords in the background. I've read posts on this forum from time to time abou...

I, too, play a 20-plus year old Dekley (built by forum member Jim Smith from the post above). I will never want, or need, another PSG unless I accidentally dropped it off a cliff. And even then, it would probably still be in tune. Thanks, Jim (and Dekley), for an incredible instrument!! ~ Travis

Bobbe is 100% correct (has THAT ever been said before???)...pedals, no pedals, knees, no knees - they all play the same to me, and no one cares or notices. I love my knee levers, but sometimes I play without using them just to force myself to find more ways to use the pedals. Then again, I play some...

Two steel tracks?

A fellow recorded a CD of original songs at a local studio, then brought it to me to add some steel. On one of the tunes I couldn't decide whether to use a "John Hughey" kind of lick, or an Emmons style for a turn around. I recorded it both ways on two different tracks so I could decide w...

My dad was an audio engeneer at KCEN from the time it hit the air until the late 50's. He did all the Barefoot "Chester" shows. I think they only used one mic, and he would have to position all the instruments in the studio to get a balanced sound. Gaylon was my inspiration to play steel. ...

I grew up in the fifty's and sixty's and, even back then, I never thought there was enough steel guitar in the country songs. To me, I don't see that anything has changed. About 10 years ago I saw an old film clip of Carl Smith singing on a stage. I never knew who that guy was, but I will never forget how stunned I was at what he was pl...

Getting permission to use songs for a CD project...

Every now and then, I go out to my little "studio" and work up one of my favorites. Someone suggesed I put them together and make a CD. How do I go about getting permission to use these songs, in the event I actually do this and someone actually wants to buy one? Any info appreciated ~~ T...
