It was Jamison Hollister. He was the steel player with Skylar. His website:

He is from my neck of the woods--Mississippi. He's from Oxford, I'm from Hattiesburg. I learned of him via a craigslist ad. Great player!

I've heard Buddy Emmons live, but I've never seen him live. I recently had the good fortune to see both Burke Carroll and Dave Easley live (with Luther Wright and The Wrongs and 3 Now 4 respectively). I asked them for the "secret" to their masterful playing after seeing them. Burke was ver...

Some really interesting responses. I find that it definitely helps to have a pool of possible choices if you don't have something already memorized. If for some reason that falls through onstage, I just take the bar to the position of the chord that's being played at the moment and slide up to the n...

Burke Carroll

Saw Burke Carroll with Luther Wright & The Wrongs (the band that did the honky tonk version of "The Wall") at The Thirsty Hippo in Hattiesburg, MS last night. His tone and his chops were incredible, to say the least. Not only that, he was a friendly and humble guy--he let me check out ...

I got my National Grand Console for a great price and did a little fixing up. I haven't played anywhere near as many steels as other guys here have (actually just the National and an "el cheapo" 6-string), but I think it's a great guitar. Don Herron of BR5-49 played the hell out of a Natio...

Don Helms, Cowboy Eddie Long

Went to my first steel show in Magee, MS yesterday. On the bill were greats such as Hal Rugg and John Hughey, but the ones that really made an impression on me were the two generations of steel players with two generations of Hank Williams--Don Helms and Cowboy Eddie Long. Mr. Helms of course was br...

Jody,

I will try out the mute. It seems like a cool idea. As soon as I get the cables hooked up and get the pedals working properly, I'll report back...

Thanks to everyone who responded--it's helped an awful lot.

A photo from "down there" would be delightful, if it ain't too much trouble. I'm making the connections OK, but as soon as I get 3 or 4 of the pedals working correctly, the 5th causes some binding. From what I've read, it's not supposed to be difficult, and for the most part it's not, but ...

EUREKA!!! I knew you guys knew the score!! I've been reading this forum for a couple of years now, and someone always seems to know the answer! Howard and Baz--you guys rock!! The pictures help immensely! OK, now that problem's solved. Now if I could just hook up the cables right http://steelguitarf...

Perhaps that's the key. Now that I look at them, the changers are kind of worn on top in the middle, and it looks like that could have been done by strings being stretched across them. So the strings should go into the changers from the pickup side, come out the back, across the top of the changers ...

I got an email from Carl saying that he's pretty sure the changers ARE the bridge, and that maybe someone installed a tall non-Fender pickup that might have had a cover doubling as a bridge. That makes sense, because as he also pointed out, neither the changers nor the current pickup can be raised o...

Bobby, Thanks for your reply. Yes, this steel has 2 10-string necks, 10 pedals (2 added by previous owner?) and one knee lever. I've seen the 1000 manual--it just doesn't address what my problem seems to be. The strings that I've put on lay across the pickup, actually making contact with pickup. Of ...

Help with Fender 2000

I'm new to pedal steel, so forgive me... I just got a Fender 2000 last week. It was shipped without strings on it, so I couldn't see how it was done to begin with. The problem is, the strings that I've put on make contact with the pickup--they just lay right across it. I have taken the pickup out--i...

Just got a Fender 2000 today. The string mutes are giving me a problem. I want to take them off, but then there seems to be nothing to keep the string from laying right on top of the pickup, as it's doing now. It came without strings, so I have nothing to compare it to. Can anyone help me out? I wil...

I'm new to the group--I was given a slight variation of the C6 tuning by DJ of The Souvenirs. He told me to tune it this way, low to high: E G A C E G I just started using this tuning in my country band, and it sounds phenomenal. I had been using an open G tuning (I only really played the three treb...
