"The first time I heard Buck with Ralph just blew my mind; it's rare that the correct synergy is accomplished when the right guys get together." Mooney has that chemistry with ANYONE he plays with (Some say his work with Waylon is his best). It is MOONEY! He has the best touch in the world.

There are better twins out there, but that showman cabinet should sound great (it better at over 100lbs!)

Tone-Ring vs. Traditional Porting vs. Sealed

I am going to have a repro fender showman 1X15" cabinet built for a D130F I have sitting around. I originally planned on a tone-ring design, but now I am wondering if a traditional front port or sealed enclosure would be better.

This will be for steel and tele, btw.

Check the connections to and from the reverb tank. I have had problems like you describe from intermittant rca cable connections.

Assuming the speaker is a D130(F)? Breaking the cone in is not your problem. There are no more recone kits for D130s available. If they say "authentic JBL parts" they are simply reconing it with an E-130 kit unless they have some NOS D series kits (highly unlikely). The recone will never s...

Tab for "Try not to be so lonely" (Jim Lauderdal

Not sure who plays on this record (see my post in "steel players"), but I love the break on this song, especially the signature lick.

I am a bit of a beginner; anyone have this record that could tab it for me?

Thanks!!

Who's the steel player?

on Jim Lauderdale's Point of No Return album? There is some great playing on this record, with some nice tone as well.

I absolutely love the solo on "Try Not to Be so Lonely"

You've got it mixed up with a super. A quad is indeed a 4x12 twin.

Yes, but my Shobud is metal necked (and a newer one at that) but is still all Shobud in tone. The pickups are about 17Kohms. A twin with the bright switch "on" will make a big difference, ESPECIALLY with JBLs.

I'd just like to add that I am very much a beginner on steel. I haven't been playing long (couple years), my knowledge of the instrument/technique/tone all stink. That said, I play a Pro III Shobud through a JBL-loaded Twin, and I can get that "transparent" sound with ease. I strongly agre...

Webers tend to be dark speakers in general. Also keep in mind that the calis only have a 2" voice coil, compared to the JBL's 4" coil.

I'll keep my D130F and D120F's, thank you. I haven't heard any other so sparkly and so smooth as an old JBL.

It's a '69.

The drip edge was around from late '67 to mid '69. Actually, the odd thing about my PR is the black lines on the face plate. Normally, they are only on the EARLIEST of silverface amps (67-early '68).

There is no substitute for the big iron in a twin. The headroom is FAR greater than any deluxe, souped up or not. Ever look at the trannies in a twin...?

Yes, it is a D120F. The 10" equivalent was the D110F.

It is a very tight fit. The frame touches the reverb pan, and one of the "spokes" clears the output tranny by about 4 mm.

JBL is indeed the way to go. I put a D120F in my '69 PR, and I it is absolutely fantastic. Much better than previous 10"ers I had tried, including a couple Webers. http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2002-12/80754/DXGQXVZHTDXMRCDOGGEZ-Princeton%20Reverb%20back.jpg <FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b&qu...

Webervst will do recones of JBLs. They only charge $60, but I haven't heard anything about the quality.

Any pro recone with official JBL parts will recone a D120F with an E120 cone, which is quite different and won't sound the same.

I'd almost guarantee you it's the monitor. Just turn the monitor off and see if the hum stops. I play single coil guitars and do home recording into a PC. My multitrack software has keyboard shortcuts for transport functions (i.e. "R" for record). Before laying down a track, I turn off the...

The frame was very clean.

There is big demand for these speakers, even if they need rebuilding.

I play a shobud through a twin, and the only effect I ever use (other than the amp's reverb) is a delay pedal. I have an old boss DM-2 analog delay set for a short repeat to simulate some room ambience. You'd be surprised how many steel recordings have delay on them, even though you don't really not...

Johnny Rebel question (caution racism content)

I do not want to start a racism discussion (it has no place here), but I am curious to know some information about the MUSIC from the early 60's that was attributed to "Johnny Rebel". I am aware of the historical context, and do not wish to discuss it here! The music is interesting, though...
