I’ve decided I need to sell the guitar more than I need a dobro. Currently working on my Masters Degree in nursing, tuition this quarter is gonna eat me up, I need the money. I got this guitar from Damir Basic last year, it was the road guitar for Sasha Ostrovisky (Darius Rucker Band). Damir said it...

Career Sho-Bud Players

I was sitting here listening to Lloyd, and got to thinking about something. Is Lloyd & Pete Drake the two players that solely played a Sho-Bud the majority of their careers?. I know Lloyd played a JCH at some point, but from my understanding he’s played a Sho-Bud most of his life. Is there anyon...

I read an article somewhere that Weldon Myrick done some steel work on one of Elvis’s songs, but I can’t render what record or track it was. Maybe someone here knows?

Bruce’s ride on Skaggs “ You Got A Lover.” I was 14 at the time and went out and bought the “Highways and Heartaches” album and wore out my record player playing it. I was in love with his tone and his phrasing. A couple of years later he was playing with Mel Tillis at a farm progress show in Minne...

Another one I thought was cool is Big Jim Vests trick of tuning the B string down like he did on Paychecks “Satin Sheets” and Verns “Set em Up Joe”, that’s such a unique lick.

For me, it was the steel solo on "What Do I Know" by country music band Ricochet. The song is featured on their self-titled record, "Ricochet" and I thought Teddy Carr had played on the song for awhile, then I found out from Ricochet lead singer Heath Wright that the only band m...

Ooooo yea, that’s a good one. He’s getting a real “dreamy” tone on that one, I always thought it was so cool!

The Steel Ride that Got You Hooked

I always like to ask this question, because it surprises me at some of the answers and lots of times it introduces me to something new I like. So, here it goes….. What Steel Guitar Solo got you hooked and made you wanna play? The one ride, that absolutely lit one heck of a fire under you when you he...

5 Month Progress

A few more days will make 5 months I’ve been playing this thing. I absolutely love it, and it’s changed my life completely. I play everyday, and I hope to take it as far as god and my talent will let me. I sure appreciate everyone’s help on here, and being a member here has helped me quite a bit so ...

Re: PP or All Pull

David, I hear what you saying and understand!, To put it bluntly, beauty is in the ear of the beholder!… Different people like different things. I have an all pull guitar and wouldn’t trade it for 20 push pulls but that’s just my taste.(to each his own).My all pull guitar was setup to my standards ...

........Only change I like on my Derby that some push pulls might not have is the RKL raises the 1st & 2nd string and lowers the 6th. ....... There's nothing about that that is a problem. However, you could not combine the 6th string lower with the B pedal the way you can with an all-pull. Ditt...

+1 on all the comments about not that hard to maintain/work on a P/P. As far as stability, P/Ps are by far the most solid guitars I've ever owned for staying in tune and not requiring tweaks at the changer on every gig. I don't even get the changer wrench out of the pack seat, it just doesn't happe...

To Push/Pull or just Pull?

Long read, bear with me………Ever since I got into this thing, I knew I’d HAVE TO have me an Emmons at some point. I’m currently working on selling one of my Prewar Gibson Banjers so I can buy me a D10. Already found one for a good price, and it’s been professionally rebuilt by a reputable guy, ready t...

The Great Curly Chalker

I absolutely LOVE Curlys playing, he’s the man when it comes to the back neck (on the front for him) in my opinion. Bruce Bouton is my hero on E9th, but for C6th it’s definitely Curly. Something about his pickin just lights a fire under me. I hope when I upgrade to a D10 later in the year, I can lea...

Well done, David!!! I'd had my steel for several weeks when an experienced player told me: "Jump in at the deep end - you'll learn much faster if you put yourself on the spot." That's what you've done and your intonation is very good already. I can't quite see it: what steel do you have? ...
