If anyone has a recommendation on which one is easier to navigate, that would be great. I am leaning toward sticking with the Scotty's (Helms) tuning which has the 1,3,5,6 adjacent on strings 6/5/4/3; more akin to the A6/C6 and my dobro roots. I don't consider the Don Helms E13 to be a true 13th tu...

I asked for help here a while back and mostly it is a tough road. I think many people would be interested in some more instructional material on this one. Of all the BIG steel guitar tunings E13 is my favorite. I have played around with a couple versions, but they are all challenging. I think it is ...

I'm not interested in hearing them mutated into some weird free style like the work of Bela Fleck or Jean Luc Ponty. I accept the limitations of popular music, and I believe its appeal is familiarity. However, when musicians master their instruments, I sense many get bored with familiarity. A typic...

I have been thinking about doing a poll to gauge the average ages of the people who are active on this forum. Things seem a bit healthier over on the pedal side, but some of the same issues still apply. If we are talking about strictly non-pedal steel in western music, I will suggest that the lack o...

A mess of wires, but this is a flexible little wiring harness that would make easy work of the job. Even has an xlr output! https://www.ebay.com/itm/285025915364

Looking through these again the NiteFly Mojo wiring looks pretty simple. Uses a 5831 chip as a preamp it seems. One tone, one volume and a 3 way selector switch. One input. I could simplify it further by eliminating the bridge pickup. The 5831 chip seems unavailable unfortunately, but I am sure ther...

https://flyclone.com/viewtopic.php?t=48 I was with Ken a lot when he was developing the Fly and Larry Fishman was designing the pickups in coordination with Ken. They had individual piezo pickups mounted in each saddle—it was a work of art. I never really checked out the Fly once they went into pro...

Here is a wiring diagram that looks pretty simple. I suppose you could put a buffer circuit between the piezo and the switch. Seems like it could work?? 3rd down

The thing about piezo cable is that it relies on pressure, so it would probably need to go in the bottom of the insert slot, and in a spider bridge, you’ve got the screw to deal with. Oh no I didn't think about that! There goes that option . I would love to hear about any experiments and the ...

What are you running it into? You could just use a stereo output jack and mix and eq pickups at a mixer. This would probably give you better quality than trying to mix passive pickups onboard. I have a couple options for amps Tweed Deluxe and Princeton clones and my current favorite for steel guita...

You should look into the old Parker Fly for info about this. Ken had a piezo mixed with regular guitar pickups and a blend control. I am sure there is plenty of online discussion about it. I had never heard of those before. Very unique, forward thinking design. I found many discussions but can't se...

I would be running it through an preamp pedal, but Including an active onboard preamp is not a bad idea. I found many people saying piezos don't work well without a preamp, and many people claiming they can be made to work just fine. All claim to be authorities on the matter. I guess it might be the...

Best way to wire a piezo on a resonator?
This may be more appropriate over in electronics, but I know a bunch of people here have great insight into this subject. I have read up on this a bit, but I can't really find a consensus. I see a number of possibilities, different styles of piezos etc. I am not interested in the Jerry Douglas syste...

Bohemian Rhapsody here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXphQ0wrdPU Imagine what a mind it takes to interpret this to one instrument, lap steel, with the full musical content, not just copping the important phrases here and there but the entire piece. A tune which took Mercury seven years to write ...

I don't think you missed a beat Rich. Watching and listening to a lot of great C6 pedal steel players, it seems to me that most don't really use pedals so much for fast single note stuff. Pedals just get in the way and seem to be more useful for chord solos and comping. E9 Is a whole different story...

If you are into building things, or on a budget this type of saw has a ton advantages. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgRVVZSy1ik This is a crude version, but seems to work pretty darn good. Many other videos. This could be designed with a larger saw for more substantial cuts in wood or metal. I wa...
