I think playing a laptop will improve your attack and feel as a bit of bar movement is all you have got the work with. Pedal steel is too easy to rely on the pedal and levers for changes. You may end up with the best of both worlds.

Yes just replace but if you wished to the best thing would be to take the rod out and clean up the threads as there will be left over plastic in them. A wire brush or run a threading die over it.

Or maybe a collar on the cross shaft which takes up the slack.

Btw some lubrication looks in order.

Depending on how much additional tuning you need if it is less than say an eighth of a note then adjusting the pedal travel can be easiest (jon light’s red option) and offer insignificant extra pedal travel.
