Lap steel C6 strings on a classical acoustic?
Ive just changed the strings on my Sx 3 to CEGACE(C6) and I am loving the sound! So much so that I am giving up on learning the 1 finger barre method for my small acoustic. It's a classical so The action is high enough to play with a tone bar but since it's a classical I guess a lap steel strings ar...

Thanks Fred. I didn't mean to imply that it is easy. Yeah I could stumble along and play each note and with practice someone might recognize the song but I don't kid myself. At 78 I don't have enough time left to be anywhere near that good. Answering my many questions, some people have mentioned the...

Thanks, Bill. I played around a little with John Ely's Chord Locator a bit. Looks like it will be some work to do before I get it as readable as the chart above, if I ever do. I couldn't find any other tunings like the one laid out like the one above so the method must not be consistent with other t...

Thanks Fred. I understand now why it's called a C6 tuning! Tell me though, Can I make my own charts like this for other open tunings and calculate the minors, 7ths and other chords, or do I need a masters in music to attempt it? I'm pretty comfortable with math and some music theory. Where would I l...

Thanks, Allen for the quick reply. I'm glad to know that I was correct. I do remember some music theory. I took violin lessons when I was young and some organ lessons when I was a young man so Major, minor 7th, augmented and diminished, are not strangers, although I still need to learn a lot. It see...

A little help reading a chord chart.
I found this chart on YT for C6 Tuning and was wondering how to read it. https://bb.steelguitarforum.com/userpix2020-03/20385_C6_Tuning_Chords_1.jpg The main image is the guitar tuned to c6. [1] there are three sets of chords: Major, Minor and 7th. [2] Up above the strings are two areas. Major with ...

OK Gotcha! Thanks. I was intending to order a C6 set from Amazon anyway, just wanted to try it out first. Don't want to ruin my LS though. I've never changed strings in a guitar before, I'm just a little nervous. Do you think my local store would be able to change the strings on a lap steel? I know ...

Open G to Open C6
Hi!
The strings that came with my SX 3 LS were for Open G. Can I retune to Open C6 without fear of breakage?
Thanks,
Paul

Hi! Thanks Nic for replying. I don't have a band, I'm just a 78 year old looking to playing an instrument. I chose steel and lap steel guitar because of arthritis in my left hand. I could slant the bar; I had heard about that too somewhere, I forgot where. Do you know about a chart or diagram somewh...

Steel guitar and minor chords
Hello!
Can you play minor chords on steel guitar? If so where can I find chord charts for them or maybe what phrase do I search on?
Thanks,
Paul

Thanks Brooks, but the image is too small for me to see clearly, but I had an epiphany since I created the post. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't an open tuning just tuning to a chord where when played open gives you that chord and then subsequent chords are made by the steel on the frets from 1 t...

I played around with my classic guitar with a steel until my LS arrived. It worked, even on the three nylon strings! Being acoustic you won't get no auditorium volume though. Since the nylon strings worked, I bet a steel on nylon strung ukulele would also. I wish I had a Uke to try it on though. Tha...

Here is a little video I did to solve your problem, https://www.facebook.com/bill.mccloskey.54/videos/117341556905921 Thanks Bill I'll Try that link. tone bar scrapes across strings
I am having problems with my my Lap steel SX3. I don't have an amp yet but when I use my steel, an Alnicov, I can hear the tone bar scraping across the strings. I have Open G strings tuned to Open E. These are the strings that came with it. Is it the quality of the strings, is it that the strings ar...

Thanks for all the info! While I didn't get a direct answer for my question about what octave the notes for the different tunings were in, I was able to figure it out by listening to the pitch for the different strings and comparing those to my keyboard. That gave me the number of the octave they we...

How to tune my Lap Steel
Hi! I'm new to the forum and to lap steel. I recently bought an SX LAP 3 in order to learn how to play. I have no experience with Lap steel but I have a little music theory and a little piano. I don't understand how to tune my Lap 3. My LAP tree arrived with a ll the strings loose and if I over tigh...
