That looks right, Dennis - thanks!

It's just that little chromatic spot that had me guessing. Much appreciated.

Emmons - what's he doing?

He's all over this old Glen Campbell track but there's a pattern he was fond of playing back in the '70s that always caught my ear.

It's right at the 2'25" mark (over the 4 chord); I can't find it. Any clues?

Ha! This is indeed the place! :) Where, if not here, eh? Dale: My aim is to find a solution to as many harmonic conundrums as I can, especially on E9. I idle away my time doing this, now I no longer play for a living. You do much the same, but not being able to put it into words or theoretical terms...

That's a good idea, And C#m9 (14th fret): 10,9,7,6 (B/C pedals) F#7 (14th) 9,6,5 (np) Bm9 (9th fret) 9,6,5,4 (A/B pedals (picking the 6,5,4 consecutively gives us the melody): (Ah: I now see that's what you wrote) "Take pedals BC up for the dom5 sound same fret and resolve 5 frets lower with AB...

I'd seen that relationship, Andrew (Emaj7/C#m being relative to each other); it took a moment, though. I'm still surprised that standard charts for this tune don't make it C#m9; that '9' is the melody rather than a flavor note. My E9 version sounds every bit as full as on C6; I'm not missing that C#...

That's true, Fred, and I do have that change, but I wanted to maintain a thicker timbre and keep it more C6-like, tonally speaking. The C#m7/9 (although it lacks an actual C#) on 9,6,5 sounds more compact and the resolution to F#7 simply by releasing the A/B pedals is smoother. I think that 'add 9' ...

Cherokee - a question.

This may belong in 'Music' but, here goes... It's traditionally in Bb. Every single chart for this tune (fake-books, etc) gives the first chords of the bridge as C#m7/F#7/Bmaj9 (down a tone, it's the iim/dom7/1maj9, the sequence descending in whole steps thereafter). Interestingly, the melody note (...

Thanks, Ian. I don't care for them aesthetically, but I must say the tuning is really stable. I barely have to touch it whereas my Emmons is prey to the ups-and-downs of FL weather. I finished changing strings and mine's not quite as neat as yours, Ian. It's certainly nothing like it was when new tw...

Ian: I'm changing strings for the first time on my new keyless Williams. I'm finding it challenging to maintain that 1/4" that Bill R. recommends (between the nut-roller and the string-holding block); you can start that way but, once you tune up, the block has to move away from the nut. It's my...

I will say this for Bobbe; I once caught him in a rare moment of humility. This was 2004, I think, at the Chattanooga Show. I wandered up to where Bobbe was setting out his sales table and he looked a little bit down. Quietly, I asked him if he was okay. He had this slightly haunted look as he told ...

Hex tuners?

Where can one buy these? I can't imagine that they're exclusively made for steel guitars. Are they a hardware-store item? I know that there are known sources, but sometimes a 'minimum order' is applied. Does anyone know the right thread for an Emmons LeGrande? As a 'PS', I have to admit to a bit of ...

I'm with Bob Hoffnar on this one. The things he'd make up just to get out of a scrape defied credibility, yet you'd stand there nodding in agreement. He did me a favour or two but I was lucky! There were some outlandish yarns about repairs being returned to the customer minus a part or two. But: he ...

I recall Andy Reiss telling me about the studio steel player who, seconds before he's about to do the overdub on C6th on a whim, hears a voice sounding in his ear:

"Think of your family!"

Apocryphal, no doubt, but amusing.
