Heads Up: 50's Triple 8 Custom

There's a newly listed early 50's Triple 8 Custom at Dave's Guitars www.davesguitar.com with trapazoid p/u's, walnut finish, for $795. Looks pretty clean for its age and a good price. No affiliation with store, but they seem like good guys. Check it out.

Thanks for the Update Mac, glad to hear the club is still meeting, with you at the helm. Besides the excellent steel players, there was also good guitar (the Tahitian rhythm player in particular...can't remember his name)& ukes. Lots of interesting old steels (like the Commodores) you don't see ...

Hi Mike, does the DVD have the Slim Galliard footage that was on the VHS version? I lost my tape and may order the DVD. The Speedy & Jimmy stuff is excellent.

Thanks,

G'day Mac, I'm sure we crossed paths in NZ. I was a member of the NZ Hawaiian Steel Club for a little while before returning to the States. Do you still meet in Pt. Chev? I remember good times with the nice and talented players there (some with the old Commodores). I have limited access to the net. ...

I saw Glen play many times around Auckland when I was living in New Zealand. I moved back to SoCal in '99 and he was still there then. He used to play with Al Hunter (country singer), Billy Hood (Rockabilly/Jazz), Glen Moffat (country), Brendon Ham (country/rock) and quite a few others, including se...

I think the matching amp concept is totally bitchin. If you play a vintage lap steel and don't need overwhelming volume they really compliment one another... both in looks and tone. Playing with ukes, acoustic guitar or upright bass, you don't need much volume. These little vintage amps are very coo...

I seemed to have misplaced my copy and would like to order another. The Jimmy Bryant/Speedy West stuff is great, especially "Flyin' High". This is early, live TV and is rare footage. I haven't seen or heard of any other footage of Jimmy Bryant. The Slim Gallard stuff is especially o'voutvi...

Got my copy in the mail today. Thanks for the fast delivery, Andy. Just started reading it, but looks great. Good job with the content, graphics, layout and printing. This is one, like the Smith Fender book, that I will keep going back to.
Congratulations on your achievement.

I think the wider string spacing on the RD-45 is a big advantage. I played one at McCabes in Santa Monica and it sounded real good with comfortable action. I checked out a RD-75 a few weeks later and did not like the narrow string spacing. The spider on the Regals looks like it is not metal but mayb...

Guitar Center in Hollywood has another Bigsby reissue. (one of the new ones made by Gretsch?). This one is a double, pointed cutaway with a flat top, two pick-ups, vibrola bar, flat birdseye maple-cap top over what looked like a chambered maple body, bound neck with bow-tie position blocks. I had a ...

I saw the Japanese Stringmasters included on a poster that Fender produced about 8 years ago showing their complete product line. I was curious about availability. I attended the NAMM show in Anaheim a couple of years ago and asked the guys at the Fender booth about them. No-one knew a thing. It see...

The trick with a Pignose is to turn the volume down on your guitar a little. If your volume control is full on, they distort like a buzz-saw (which is what alot of players like about Pignose). Opening the cabinet helps get some air into the sound. If you turn your guitar volume down a little, the to...

Speaking of Cliffie Stone, the lyrics are GREAT. I had a Speedy West LP with the lyrics and they really added to the song IMHO. Cindy Cashdollar has a good arrangement on her Homespun tape that lays out real nice. I still think Leon's original version with Bob Wills absolutely burns. I remember the ...

Hey Andrew, glad to hear a forumite took the plunge on the new Johnson tri-cone square neck. For the money, this looks like a great deal. For some reason I had thought the Regals and Johnsons were from the same company (maybe some models). There is a similar and also confusing use of the swastika as a logo on vintage surfboards made about the same period by Pacific Systems. These were solid wood, plank syle boards with a small swastika placed on the top near the tail. They are referred to by collectors as "swastika models". ...
