Sure, here is my tiple and its label: https://i.imgur.com/dtxxMlP.jpg https://i.imgur.com/X083azt.jpg (The ball end sticking below the bridge is because I have it in Chicago tuning so the bass string is a bit larger than the bridge is reamed for.) I don't have a Hilo Hawaiian guitar, but I do have a Hilo tiple. I believe Hilo instruments were a variety of Oscar Schmidt and made in New York, but my tiple sounds great and I've really liked the two Hilo Weissenborn-style guitars I've heard. Good luck with your project!

I'm a fan of the small, vintage tube amps. I use a Supro Super 5w and a Gibson Falcon 12w, and love the sound of both. They're not as cheap as a new, solid state small amp, but they're cheaper than Fenders of the same vintage, and sound so good.

You're not kidding about the strong as heck part! That's got to be the most solid wooden head I've ever seen. Looks great, too. I love the Art Deco styling.

Good luck, and happy hunting. I ended up with the nut driver because I also couldn't find those anywhere.

I don't have any to spare, but I recently purchased a 5mm nut driver on ebay for less than $10 including shipping, so if you're willing to live with a screwdriver-sized tool instead of a small wrench, they're gettable.

I don't know the man or what he is up to, but this rung a bell and I remembered this: https://www.instagram.com/p/CF3NYQbBECU/ It's just a short clip of him taking a 1954 Fender Custom T8 that a guitar shop here in Portland had for sale for a spin from early October. He's clearly still got it, wheth...

Thanks for posting, Susan. I've listened some, and can't wait to dig deeper! I love the directions you take the pedal steel and I love Mary Halvorsen's playing, so this is right up my alley. Congratulations on the record and the deserved attention it's getting.

I've never heard of them (though I like 'em), but the comment on the youtube vid says it was Dan Ross playing the steel guitar (in addition to sharing lead guitar and singing backup).

Amp tech in Portland?

I've been using my Gibson Falcon as my pedal steel amp, but have acquired an old blackface Bassman to get a tube amp with more headroom for pedal steel than the Gibson's 18 watts can provide. It needs some going over, a three prong chord, etc. I'd just as soon have the work done by an amp tech who i...

Thanks for posting, that was great. I knew Ben Harper's parents ran the Folk Life Center, but little else, so that was a lovely documentary pulling back the curtain a bit on the family and its history.

Del Ray I'd just like to thank you for posting the Sacred Steel links on the forum. It's great to see pedal steel used in a different tradition from the western swing and country music, especially one with as impressive a history and legacy as Sacred Steel. I wouldn't know where to find it without y...

I'm not nearly far enough into my steel guitar journey to talk about how I've learned, but I certainly match your descriptions of formal musical education. I grew up playing cello in orchestras, starting in 4th grade. I carried that all the way through college, playing chamber music and in orchestra...

Almost all Oahu squarenecks were ladder-braced; I believe only the early "jumbo" Nick Lucas-sized ones were x-braced. (I have a ladder-braced squareneck 71K and a Recording King-branded x-braced Nick Lucas-style Spanish neck guitar. Both are great but sound very different.) I suspect the s...
