I installed the four OPA2134PA chips today in the Bandit 65, testing continuity and function as I went. Dripped contact cleaner in the sockets. Thn I played through the Bandit’s Texas Heat 12/8 speaker and did a 15 minute test drive on my Stratocaster. Haven’t plugged in a steel yet, no time, unfort...

Great speaker for solo guitar, but I think I would want something tighter in the bass response for steel. I play my Texas Heat with a strat and a telecaster and it’s fantastic. Careful on how I play it, though, I have to consider that sometimes the low end isn’t as articulate as other speakers, and ...

If reliable/accurate, Thai page has some interesting info about the beginning of Jim Evans / Sho Bud. https://jaazz.me/2011/01/06/evans-custom-amplifier-review-history/ Clean all the way up, so the early ones were hijacked as PA systems for rodeo callers. We have a local store that has a few Evans o...

Re: Honk?
Hello, I've heard the term peavey "honk", a few times. What sound or characteristic is this referring too? Thanks.....Pat. The honk is a pronounced mid range response… and either mitigated, complemented, or exaggerated by different speakers, effects, pickups (channeling Hawkeye Pierce in ...

Might look at where the MV is in the circuit, too. Circuits with pre-phase inverter master volume controls are not going to yield the same tone with the MV turned down as they will with the control turned up. Just had this conversation last night, and demoed it for a friend on his amp, which he was ...

I agree, a newer faster op amp isn’t necessarily desirable if the circuit was designed around a specific original chip that was available at the time of manufacture. I’ve encountered this with Tube Screamer modifications in the past — sometimes it’s a win, sometimes it’s not. Diodes aside, there are...

Op amp replacement in Peavey Bandit 65
I have a Peavey Solo Series Bandit 65 and have heard tell of replacing the RC4558P op amps with newer, higher tech chips that replaced the RC4558P. It’s a good amp but seems unbalanced when it’s loud, even with a Texas Heat in there, and gets icy especially with the reverb up. Some forum posters hav...

It's getting there. Girlfriend is pleased (it is shiny and clean). I told her I would use the Maguire's I bought for the celluloid to wash and wax her Chevy. Probably buffed 50 years of nicotine stains out of the surface. https://bb.steelguitarforum.com/userpix2020-03/19622_20201115_165757_1.jpg The...

Replacement ferrules?
Is there a modern drop in replacement for string through body ferrules on a 40s/50s Carvin lap steel? Mine measure 9mm at the flange and 6mm from the outside edge of the cylinder beneath. Seems like everything I'm seeing online is a bit larger than that. I can drill or ream the existing holes but wo...

Yup. Chick Webb had a set shaped like skulls IIRC.David M Brown wrote:Chinese temple blocks - semi-tuned woodblocks. They were common in the 20's and into the 30's on trap sets.Brooks Montgomery wrote: What are the round gourd looking drums above the bass drum?
I can’t make them out on my phone.

http://www.carvinmuseum.com/playersgallery/kiesel.html I'm convinced that's a circa 1950 Kiesel or Carvin based on pictures from the Carvin museum website. They don't have a picture of your exact guitar, but notice the similar knobs, grey pearl covering, and the one guitar pictured at the bottom wi...

Reading a bit about Carvin (the only experience I have with Carvin is with their electric guitars and amplifiers... they made fantastic guitars in the 70s and 80s). He changed the shape of the steel guitar body from aquiline to straightedged sometime around when he changed the name of the company fr...

I think it's a Carvin... what do you think it is?
Picked this up for a whole 20 clams today, well loved and a little rough. Two different sets of tuners. Dirty as sin. A few gashes in the celluloid. The name badge must have fallen off, but looks like a Carvin. What do you think it is? I've never owned a Carvin before, just seen pictures. 8) https:/...

I was considering dobro tuning. I flat pick for bluegrass with a different set of guys, and I'm looking to add the steel guitar in with the rock band that does a lot of dirt rock stuff and old country songs. Right now it is tuned EAEACsE which is familiar to me because I play 5-string banjo. The dyn...

Congrats on the string-through...the lower output might just be magnets that have gotten weak and need re-magnetizing...my Oahu Diana string-through is pretty strong... Or, are you using Phosphor Bronze strings, not Nickel? That could do it, for sure... And just so you know, you might want to start...

You know, the reason I narrowed my search down to a couple of makes of steel guitar was because I saw Lindley playing a Supro on TV. It seemed like after watching a million videos, the string-through pickup type was the way to go. I do enjoy how warm it is, and low output is fine. I am finding that ...

Silvertone 1311
Hi everybody. Chris, here. Longtime lurker, finally up and joined the forum. I bought my first straight steel today, a Silvertone 1311. It's in great shape, original cable, case, and a few sets of old Black Diamond strings inside. I'm excited to get learning -- Been playing the guitar in various gen...
