Picking harder, or increasing volume, can quickly push it into overdrive. Then chords distort, especially the mid-range notes at third intervals (i.e., the E and C# on the fourth and fifth strings), creating a harsh “woofish” overtone. Last week I heard a pedal designer mention the harmonic informa...

Everyone’s advice really helped me work through this, but it has taken several months to digest. Here’s what I have learned: I initially bought a used Wampler Ecstasy (aka Euphoria) Overdrive because I could test it out at a local store. It has an adjustable Bass knob that provides more low- and mid...

Thanks for the responses. Noah, I do use an EQ and compressor, and I like that sound. I cited the resistance because Paul did, with the understanding that my pickup has to differ in some way from lower resistance pickups on single coil Strats. Just how it differs in relation to pedals and amps is th...

Overdrive/Distortion Pedal

I love the clean sound of my Melbert 8-string lap steel that has a George L 10-1 pickup (Jimmy Day style, 19.5 ohms), through my Polytone amp. However, I wonder if I should get an overdrive pedal to have the option of thickening the sound. I came across this Paul Franklin interview about distortion ...

Great idea. “Assistant Cover (don’t know what to call it)” sounds too close to “Assisted Living.” How about “Gripper”? A slide is is already described as “EZ.”

However, getting to the “trio” section as they called it in ragtime, it was really challenging and that little chordal turnaround that I play took me a whole day to figure out how to play and 3 days to get it down. I love the way everything unfolds during the process. It may have taken you three da...

Because I grew up in Cincinnati, I was intrigued by many of the references to people and places there. However, the weirdest connection was finding out that the bass player on Lovesick Blues was Willie Thall. I saw him on local live TV ads in the 1960s, dressed in overalls, pitching products for the...

Re: Exploring MIDI, looping etc

This is what I’ve been up to recently and probably the path that I am going to stay on for a while, as I am feeling a rejuvenation and new excitement like I first felt when I started playing the instrument seriously. Many of my favorite musicians went down this road and, admittedly, while it wasn’t...

PS: Focus on upper extensions. Also, don’t listen to steel players to learn jazz. https://mikeneer.bandcamp.com/album/keepin-it-real Some more excellent advice from Mike Neer. All the suggestions are useful. I’ve only been playing lap steel for 18 months, so I’m not an authority. My principles of arranging: 1) Reharmonize using extended jazz chords below the melody note, as if playing melody in the same register as on the B and E strings on guitar. 2) Harmonize only q...

Both Barney Isaacs & Jerry Byrd are attributed as playing on Analani E'on the recording "The New Hawaiian Band: Hawaii's Greatest Instrumentalists" (1992) Which is playing on each chorus?

Bubbles in My Beer chords

I believe I’ve found that George Jones (with Jimmy Day, 1962) rearranged Wills’ Bubbles in My Beer in the B section: 1) Wills [and John Hughey, Ray Price, Ray Pennington (Buddy), Willie Nelson] B section: |IV | IV | I | I | V | V | I | I | 2) Jones B section: |IV | IV | I | I | I | I | V| V | I ...

Don't remember what key Morrell played, but the tune is the old Mills Brothers tune OPUS 1 in . Tommy Dorsey also had a rendition in G. You can probably find it on one of the internet chords and lyrics sites and maybe transpose to the key if it's not right.... Or someone here may just be able to do...
