Adieu, mon Hawaii: International Hawaiiana from 78 RPM Recor

Inspired by Sebastian's recording of Guitara Que Llora, by Les Loups, I started sitting the Internet over for non-country, noon-Hawaiian, Hawaiian guitar. I was rewarded with this compilation. There are some real gems in this album! https://archive.org/details/atr013adieumonhawaii Does anyone know o...

Leon Redbone covered some great country tunes, and several have dobro in them, played by some great musicians. I can't think of which songs have dobro off the top of my head though. Most every Roy Acuff tune features the playing of Brother Oswald. And going back a bit farther, the Dixon Brothers (I ...

Have you tried just ordering from their website?

I live about 30 minutes from the shop (I'm in Ithaca, NY, they are in Interlaken) and have mutual friends with the owner. If the only issue is that they won't ship it, maybe I can help you out there.

I don't play C6 too much anymore, but I'd probably get one anyhow.

1. The dyads on the 5th and 6th strings are still applicable to high bass A. And
2. I will eventually get back into C6, I think.

Stacy Phillips' books are pretty good with the caveats that: 1. It's written for high bass G, so the mp3s need a pitch shifter to play along in A. Or you tune down to G. Most apps that show tunes down also shift pitches though. 2. The mp3 files are mostly mere snippets of the songs, or mp3s of the o...

Alternatively, Ken Dale has STL files for a bullet bar "gripper." https://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=387253&highlight=gripper Ken sent me the STL file, and I printed it off at my local library's maker space. It's just a lot heavier than the shubb bar, because the shubb is ...

I no longer use it because I cannot get the same slants as a bullet bar, but the Shubb GS1 (https://shubb.com/product/gs-guitar-steel/) was, by far, the easiest bar to hold and control that I have tried. The wooden handle is so easy to grip, and you could probably glue fine sand paper or a tribute p...

I go to my wife’s nail salon and get a set of acrylic nails put on my right hand. Ray Alden, a fantastic clawhammer banjoist who has passed on, used to get "silk wraps" instead of acrylic, saying they don't chip, but rather wear down like a real finger nail. He only go three nails done at...

What is most infuriating about steel guitar for me is the very expensive "trial and error" nature of the steel guitar. 1. Choose an instrument: Do you want to play acoustic or electric? If the former, do you get a dobro, a tricone or a nut riser for that old dreadnought with a bowed neck? ...

If that doesn't work, shims under the near-side feet could add that tilt I was talking about.

Let us know how it turns out.

Chris, have you tried adjusting the angle of your console so that it does downward, away from you? When I had a D8 I found that a horizontal console fatigued my wrists and made everything awkward. Changing the angle helped, but going to a metal bodied dobro helped more. As for picks (on the steel), ...

I've never heard of Ireal Pro. Is it worth checking out? I resisted it for a long time, feeling that, if I'm bringing a tune to a band, I should have it memorized. But they aren't always my tunes, and if everyone has iReal Pro, you can share playlists (groups of songs with chord charts). And set li...

I, too, am a Sebastian Fanboy. I've used several of his tabs and love them. I always get the mp3s with the trans. Looping and slowing down sections really helps the learning process. And later, the backing tracks are so much fun to play along with, slowly increasing speed until I can play with frien...

I stopped playing in 6th tunings before trying it out, but I always liked Kayton Robert's approach of adding an extra low-low A as the 8th string, which he seems to have used mostly as a sound effects string. He played C6, but it woulnd't be out of place in A6, I reckon. Bass is bass...

This is a REALLY good question! And I've struggled with my answer. I think I am mostly playing for the swing dancers that will, one day soon, flock to see me. But I am also playing to impress Leon Redbone, the Mills Brothers, Sol, Bix, Jimmie Rodgers, etc - all sources of inspiration. (I've played b...

It helps if you know the tuning... All things being equal, if you don't know the tuning, what informs your decision to use one over another? Is it the chord progression? For example, I have been focusing on high bass A, which Sebastian retunes to C# minor. Or perhaps an E7 variation? Why one over t...

Learning the chords... I often forget that. Thanks. It really does help when I do that. And breaking a tune into phrases is solid advice. But do you transcribe or take notes as you go? Or just commit a section to memory and then plow on? As for humming the melody, I know the trick but my brain seems...
