Have you considered reentrant strings? D or …….. D A ………... A F# ……… . F# D ………... D A ………… A F# ….……. D D …………. a b ……….… b You lose the big DAD power chord with the first on, but gain B minor and Bm7 The second brings back the power chord but has awkward dual reentrant strings.

My understanding is that he played pretty much exclusively 1 5 1 3 5 1 tunings, mostly tuned D E and F. It would make sense that if he wanted to keep a guitar tuned up to G, that he might put a low G on string 7, for G G D G B D G, or maybe a low D for D G D G B D G. It would be nice to hear from so...

You can replace the low string with a reentrant 6. I do it on my 7 strings.
Either b D A D F# A D or e G B D G B D.

On 6 strings you will end up with an awkward 1-7 interval (c# B E G# B E)

You might also consider the more usual E B E G# C# E or E C# E G# B E.

… The strings that were on were: 1-e 2-b 3-g# 4-e 5-d [ drop to C# ] 6-b 7-g# 8-e Is there really this much variation in tunings? Am I supposed to just try them all and decide what's best? Re: E tuning, 8 string steel?

I'm just beginning on a double neck steel, no pedals. Can someone break down what the notes for each string should be for me? I'm confused by all of the E variations. I finally bought a set of E13's. They say to start with first string as G#, but the chord thingy I have from Cindy Cashdollar says f...

A thought…
By tuning to Dmaj7 you could use the benders to bring the D strings back up to E. One bender = Dmaj9.
Two benders = A6

Can anyone on this thread recommend tabs for G6 or some tips on to think about the tuning if we know a little C6? The BDEGBD tuning may be better for you You can use A6 TAB, since it's the same pattern up a whole step. Plus the top 3 strings still match your Dobro G tuning. Thank you David. I have ...

I should have included the BDEGBD tuning in my initial post. It’s fairly common, and is essentially the common 7string G6 without the low root.

G6 Tuning: So many tasty flavours!

Perhaps because one can tune as low as D2 on string 6 and as high as G4 on string 1 there are a myriad of playable tuning possibilities. Moving beyond six strings opens up still more possibilities. I believe that the most common versions are; GBEGBD EBDGBD But these all work too; EGBGBD EGDGBD GDEGB...
