How to measure sustain

Right now I run my lap steel into a Spark Amp, then out through the USB into my desktop, where I fiddle around in Audacity (awesome free program) and WavePad. Is there a standard way to measure the sustain/decay of a single plucked string? Are there defined values for "long" sustain? I ass...

I use a Shubb SP2 on nickel strings and have never noticed what you describe.

But, if anybody is worried about the cost of a new steel, you can finance this one. Hurry though, the special plan ends Jan. 2024.

The future of honest exchange of experience and knowledge

The times they are a changin.' In a recent post, Marc asked a great question:"What makes a great solid-body lap steel?" I built my lap steel as "a prototype" and will make changes to the final guitar, so the question intrigued me. I've learned a great deal from this fine group of...

JB, here's the process I used: I grok, thank you for the detail. There's much I don't understand. I use Audacity (free) and WavePad (cheap, no affiliation), both of which have spectrum analyzers. I downloaded the spectrum analyzer (SPAN) you referenced, and found it's not stand-alone. In Audacity, ...

Yes, they are angled in opposite directions. The Reso picks are right for lap guitars. I bought a set of Pro-Pic angled picks by mistake. I'm not a proficient player yet, but I cannot imagine how the angled picks would work on a lap guitar, or even an flat top. Return was easy and the Reso pics are ...

I'm a satisfied repeat customer, but have nothing to compare to. I've learned much from his lessons. I buy individual lessons because it suits my pace (and I bought a few before streaming started). A subscription would work great to explore different tunings. I recommend.

Thanks for replies guys. See apology below, re: original post. What I want to do is record the waveform for variable configurations of the tuning machines, nut, saddle, bridge, scale length, string selection, &tc., isolated from any electronic effects (PUP). And I don't have another PUP. The rea...

Simple setup for wave form recording

Hello all; In the spirit of the " Experiment and Find Out" method*, I want to record wave forms generated with a minimal set up to explore* some unconventional configurations for a lap steel. But I want to use stuff I have on hand. I have a single-string test rig with a tuning machine, nut...

I followed a similar path, only I had some flat-top experience and knowledge of open tunings. I'm still a beginner, so keep that in mind. I learned a lot from the Lessons With Troy products and I think it's a good start. I recommend picking one tuning and sticking to it until you can actually play a...

Fun string-stretch experiment and a quiz

QUIZ FIRST: How much does a guitar string stretch when bent a full step? Say, when you bend the second string from A to B (open D tuning)? ("Stretch" = dL = change in string length from anchor point to anchor point). Answer later. I re-rigged my test guitar to find out. Pics show general l...
