My first accompaniment

Team Steel- Most of my followers do not know or understand the steel. I have taken my first big step of recording steel over a friend's song. He likes it and allowed me to post it. I have been a member here for over 15 years. Could I ask for a critique and feedback? I would appreciate any suggestion...

The "Teach Your Children" mistake was a really annoying part of the book. If Garcia had done a scratch take on a lap steel prior to doing the final part, that would have been interesting enough to mention explicitly. Only 2 explanations: 1) Neil has only listened to the MP3 version of Teac...

Thanks for the replies, guys! This was my first shot at tabbing anything for the steel as I am a rank beginner. I still don't have a complete view as to how great players hit their chords. I just based it on the chords I knew how to hit and transition between. I didn't even own a functioning volume ...

Ben Keith - Deep Forbidden Lake

Hi All. I am a beginner steel player that loves Ben's work with Neil. A friend was planning to play Deep Forbidden lake at a gig and I offered to accompany him on steel. So then I knew I had to learn the part. Here is my attempt at tabbing it. Only problem is that I have read that Ben doesn't use a ...

Ronnie.....hmmm...I found an old unused 3/4 in thick piece of shelving in the bathroom and placed it under my left heel. It's a bit early to declare total victory, but by the feel of things, I think this is going to work out very well for me. I can already sense some improvement in pedal control fac...

There is a video on youtube of Neil Young playing "Words (Between the Lines of Age)" with his band including the great Ben Keith. Ben does use his little finger, though in an interesting way. He does not wear a pick on it and he always just extends it out straight, but during this song, he...

I love the recommendation for more "seat time" and it was nice to see that folks didn't go for the more genre compatible "saddle time" even though that would be more appropriate for a bicycle.... Anyway, I got a bunch of seat time this morning. I really need it for my intonation ...

Jim- The first time I heard a major 3rd was in Winterlong by Neil Young. I really enjoy Ben Keith's part in that song. This is the version on Decade that was recorded sometime around the "On The Beach" sessions but remained unreleased for a while. Not the more recently released version by ...

I'm guessing Neil has Ben Keith's Emmons S10. And that he'll never let anyone else ever play it.

Thanks, everyone. I think that ear training is very key for me. I have been playing, writing and even recording music for about 25 years, but there has been inconsistency and gaps. Sometimes (I'm embarrassed to admit) I play a IV when I should be playing V. That's pretty bad. My ear just needs a str...

Thank you everyone. I need to soak in as much PSG as I can this week, as I start a new job on the 18th. And then not as much time will I have. Hanging with players is the right idea, if I can squeeze it in.

OK, and I'm testing my signature file here....Thanks for sharing the policy with me.

Perspective of a new player

I finally got serious with my steel during the last few months. I wanted to share some observations and get some inputs. It's taken me some time to make sense of the instrument and find some chords and scales that I can use. I've devised a learning aid that helps me make sense of most of the other t...

How does plastic sweat? Is this just condensation from moisture in the air? I had originally covered the steel with a tapestry but the fibers from the tapestry were getting into the changer and it didn't really serve the purpose of keeping the thing clean. Maybe all I need is a felt pad under the pl...

I didn't see this thread and I made one out of clear plastic sheet and clear duct tape. And no, I didn't buy this stuff for a bioterrorism attack :-) My question is....is this an OK long term solution? Does anyone know if clear plastic sheets have any long-term detrimental effects on the metal or an...

Thank You. I got under the guitar and adjusted LKL so that it would engage more left of center. Actually, the kneebar, the way it was, was hanging slightly to the right and would engage just right of center. This adjustment has moved LKL far enough out of the way that to hit A with ankle rocking is ...

LKL Blues

Another forum member mentioned the increasing difficulty in rocking to the A pedal without moving LKL. Well, I'm only 33 and this is one part of PSG that really frustrates me! Granted, I am only just beginning, but I can't do the "A-B" rock without activating LKL!. (E9 tuning, by the way.)...

Emmons S-10 Help Requested

I've had a love-hate relationship with my Emmons S-10. I believe it is a 1971 PP set up in Emmons E9 with a fourth pedal which is 1/2 of the Franklin change. It also has 4 knee bars. Truth is, I purchased it here but have had little time to play with it! It needs a setup too. Does anyone know of som...
