Saw RR in SF with my sister and her kids. We all agreed that it was the best live rock show we had ever been to. Super high energy, great band and just alot of fun. As a steel guitar show, it was lacking, but for pure entertainment, it was great.

Does anybody remember an article that Tom Bradshaw wrote years ago about how we as steel players were doing a dis-service to ourselvs by insisting that steel should only be used in the "traditional" country genre? He advocated that pedal steel should be used in new and exciting ways, but s...

Maybe with the growing popularity of RR, people like Joe Wright, Joe Goldmark and other progressive players will get more exposure. I am just glad that the pedal steel is getting to be known as a lead instrument and not just as that "twangy thing" or as a novilty sound. Maybe as more peopl...

Robert Randolph fans

At the KFOG Kaboom in SF he played in front of about 60,000 people if not more. Great show! While his tone and technique did not have a hint of country, he was still awesome. He also plays a mean standard guitar. Aside from the fact that I really enjoyed his set, I heard lots of people say things li...

It seems to me that Jerry Douglas or Mike Aldridge have performed that tune on Dobro. Anyone heard one of them do it?

I saw ZZ at the Soreline near SF a couple of months ago, and I thought they were great. As good or better than when I saw them in 1984.

He also did some decent(not great) pedal steel on some of Rod Stewarts earlier stuff as well as with the Stones. I like his lap and bottle neck stuff better though.

Sheryl Crow's lead guitarist uses a setup very simular to the one in the link. Although he does some very basic pedal steel sounds(tasty none-the-less), I believe there is some great potential with this type of guitar.

Only 19 Multiharps made?

Check out this one on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=931172938
The seller says only 19 made. That is not correct is it? Let's here from some of you Gibson experts.

Jody since you asked...I started looking for a fender non-pedal a few years ago. Looked in the want adds, regularly scoured the used music shops (some good ones in the Bay Area). All I could find were some supros and a Fender Champ and some really over-priced chandlers at Guitar Center. But I knew I...

Jody, I really enjoy reading your replies. Do you happen to know why the traps only lasted a couple of years? What was the general opinion of this guitar when it first came out. By the way, my Dual Pro will just slice through the mix if the treble is turned up. Add some overdrive and it will sing an...

Fender vs. Ricky pick-ups

I have a '54 Fender Dual Professional with the trapazoidal pick-ups. These are string through design and have an incredible tone. Question for you experts: Do these have any design simularities to the Ricky horseshoe pick-ups?

As a neutral observer of this thread, I'm getting a big chuckle every time I look at it. Bill H., I too would like some pictures and more detailed descriptions of your ideas. They are truely interesting. As for the few people who seem a little annoyed with Bill H. and his claims, well I can't blame ...

I originally got hooked by Joe Goldmark's first album and Bobby Black's playing on "Stealing at the 7-11". I then became interested in the earlier artists and the roots of pedal steel. I think national exposure can only help. I guess there are alot of opinions about what direction the stee...

I like it! I have noticed many times that a quick reference to the fretboard is all I need and this slanted fretboard might just be at the right line of sight to do the job. Don't think I would eliminate the factory fretboard.

Chuck Berry did play steel

The question was posed a while back if Cuck Berry really did play pedal steel? Well, at the end of his movie " Hail, Hail Rock & Roll", there is good ol' CB playing a Fender 400. The movie was on AMC a few days ago. He was playing a kind of haunting delta blues thing. Although I don't ...

I've been using a Digitech RP-3 for a couple of years on standard guitar, and I've just recently started using live with my steel. I've tried a lot of differnt FX boxes, and none have out-performed the Digitech live. It's not bad for recording, but for performing it's great.

I get pretty tired of hearing perfectly played, but uninspried steel on some of the country songs out. To me it becomes just fill like a synth playing string fills (kind of Musak-ish) The "sloppy" steel played in alt country and rock can be a lot of fun to listen to. Remember, most of the ...

Well my band had a gig at the Virgin Mega Store in SF, and I played my Sierra on a couple of tunes. Keep in mind that we play pop-rock and etherial rock, but the response was very positve. Those who did not know what to call the instrument still said they really liked the "slide" sound. Ou...
