Thanks Scott. I found a faulty joint and repaired it. This along with the ground wire seems to have sorted the problem out to some extent.

I will retest once the guitar is fully setup, and if things still seem a bit dodgy first thing I will do is test it direct, without the switch in the circuit.

The only guys I know of have gone home.
I'm based in Cape Town, and would be happy to find out I'm not the only one.

Thanks Chris, I've now assembled it symmetrically.

Correction: after cleaning, I discovered there was an additional thinner washer between finger 10 and the bracket - so I'm thinking of putting one of the washers between finger 1 and the bracket between fingers 1 and 2.
This way everything would be balanced (assuming this is what one wants ...)
