Thanks Daniel, I'm glad you liked the music. And as far as new territory, I guess we all just have to go where we gotta go, and the steel guitar is our instrument we take with us.

Thanks Ian and Howard.

Ian, the reason I want by boat is that it's cheaper than sending it by air.

Howard, Thanks, I tried DHL today. No dice for them.

Sending overseas by boat

I need to send and instrument by sea to Tokyo, Japan but am having trouble finding a decent shipping company.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I'm also a fan of the old Polytones and sometimes play through the Mini Brute II. It has a reverb, but I've never been crazy about the reverb, so I just use a reverb pedal.

Keith was a good friend, and we had lots of adventures playing in dancehalls, nightclubs, ice houses all over SE Texas. He was a great musician, a fountain of knowledge about country music history, and a huge fan of the steel guitar, so much so that we could instantly twin or harmonize each others p...

Jim, I just now saw that you had included a video url. I enjoyed Melissa Martin and the Mighty Rhythm Kings at the Maas building, and you sound great on guitar (as always).

Thanks for sharing this, Brad. Pedro Infante was an iconic singer with fans throughout Latin America. It was nice to hear the steel guitar, obviously non-pedal, in this song.

Ivan, it is a lot like a C6th with a couple added S strings because that's exactly what it is. I, like probably everyone else, have modified some of the pedals and knee levers to suit my own purposes.

Thanks for writing. When they break (not all of them do), sometimes its on the changer side, and sometimes it's at the head. My guitar is the same version as Lee Gauthier's.

Thanks for that information, Lee. I've figured out how the tuning works. My question was on how to insert the ball of the string at the head (opposite of hanger) side of the guitar. I finally figured out that you could insert them from above if you wiggled the string around the right way. Current is...

Here is the copedent for my S12. It is not a universal tuning. The changes for the 4th and (my) 9th are on the left knee levers.

I've had similar problems at times on a variety of steels (mostly MSA). It seems to me like there are two ways to solve your problem (not sure it's completely "pilot error") - get a slightly thicker roller nut for the string(s) that are difficult at the first fret or put on a slightly heav...

For my two A to B's, I put them on a knee lever (LKL) with a half-stop at Bb. On the LKR, I lower the pitch on the Bottom A (9th string for me) down to G with a half-stop at Ab. That way I can use this change with all the pedals, and for raising and lower those A's, it's all on the left knee.

I own to recent Excels - an S12 that I bought used two years ago and a D10/12 that arrived at my home this last Tuesday. I love the guitars and agree with Patrick that Mitsuo Fuji is an engineering genius. His guitars are, each of them, works of, art, and like a true artist, Mr. Fuji keeps changing ...

There are four guitars that I play regularly these days - a late 70's MSA "The Universal" which used to belong to Maurice Anderson, a 1974 Emmons push/pull (originally built for Russ Hicks), an Excel S12, and, a new acquisition, an Excel D10/12. The first guitar I bought was a Sho-Bud Mave...

For those of you who might be interested, here is a video from a performance on July 12th in Philadelphia PA at the MAAS Building (where they used to repair trolley cars - in fact, on the wall behind us, you can see the crane that they used to lift the trolley cars). The first half of the performanc...
