It'd have to be something with a flat EQ. I know the Sparkle Drive is a tubescreamer based circuit so theres a midrange hump.

Puttin' some hair on the Peavey tone.

Howdy all- Before I get carried away with myself, heres my set up. GFI Ultra with the GFI II pickup. Goodrich pot pedal. Nashville 112. Sometimes a Dispatch Master for Delay/Reverb. I really like the NV112, for all the reasons that everyone does. The only thing I'm lacking is just a little bit of gr...

David is in a league of his own. His playing always has tons of great phrasing and ideas, amongst his tone and overall great skill. Your tabs have also been of great help too, when they appear on the forum. If it's not an inconvenience, I'd love to have what you've tabbed of David's stuff. NealVosbe...

Meeting a Legend

In the better late than never category, I'd like to share an incredible experience I had last year. I'd always looked up to Dan Dugmore and his playing so on a whim I decided to see if I could try and contact him. I found what I thought was his email, and sent him a message with zero expectations. W...

I'm not trying to hijack this thread into Maverick trashing, but I too had a Maverick that was entirely too short. I'm not sure if that's factory or that was something folks did. Anyone have a theory?

Origin of Mooney

As we all know, Mooney's playing is unmistakable in a recording, for me especially in the Waylon era. I finally saw a copedent chart for him on another thread and was taken aback. I'm curious as to what his point of reference, or I guess what informed his choices for his changes. Anybody have some h...

Yet another sixth string issue

Alright. Here's the facts as I know them. GFI Expo. Had a plain sixth on it for a while in hopes of attempting to tune a sixth string lower, couldn't hack it so I went back to a wound string. I put a .12 in the third string spot, and I put a 22w in for my sixth. Both strings are on and seated in the...

Thanks Erv. I'm unable to swing that change on my machine anyway. I've got a GFI Expo that I either need an extra rod to stabilize the return pitch, or I'm tuning it wrong. Either way, I can live without.

Thanks everybody for your suggestions! I'm going to give a .12 a shot, and I'm going to return to a wound string on my 6th. I just felt like I lost a lot of stability and punch when I went plain.

I'm not sure how the C6 players can look so comfortable, but there's something about how a doubleneck is set up that just seems to aide in ergonomics.

Alternate gauge for third string.

Is it possible to gauge the third string up ever so slightly? I've been having trouble keeping mine from breaking. As of recently I've been able to keep one on and tuned for a little while, but eventually it snaps at the peghead. It's a GFI Expo. Roller and tuning peg have been examined for burrs etc.

I've never cared for the SD10 models, primarily due to weight and just didn't like the look. However, Green was genius in his concept because like you're saying, it forces you to be at a proper position and distance from the neck. There's also some distance between you and the pedals. I'm on a GFI E...

Thoughts on Dire Wolf. Deadhead Trigger warning.

I was just listening back to the Grateful Dead song Dire Wolf with new ears, since I've been at the steel for a bit. All things considered, I still think its impressive. However, knowing what little I know now, I think he overplayed. I would have kept the intro, kept the solo, but it seems like he j...

Diving into the second string.

We all know Lloyd is one of the masters of the craft, and we also know he might be one of the greatest proponents of the second string. So far I'm hip to some of its uses, but I was always confused when I saw it used in conjunction with an open position grip, not raised or lowered. For example, just...

Thoughts on learning steel

So as a beginner player that's stepping into being intermediate, I was reflecting on my days as a six string player and found some interesting differences and similarities. As I played six string I'd often listen to things by great players for inspiration. For example, Brent Mason. World class playe...

Popularity of SD to Single

For years I've stuck to single neck steels, assuming that an SD was reserved for lazy old guys (soon to be one) to rest their arms. Not until I was fortunate enough to meet with an up and coming steel player named Dan Dugmore, that I was shown that the knee levers are set closer to you on an SD. I s...

New discoveries (for me) Plain vs wound 6th

So this is the first time I've had a plain 6th on any steel I've owned. I know a lot of people have complaints about it having a plonky, weak sound, but I was most surprised by the lack of definition on my particular guitar (Expo) when rocking onto a closed position. It's lost to my ears and find my...
