I just bought a repro "1939 Century" Epiphone Electar lap steel. It was advertised as having an "Epiphone 500B Blade Humbucker Pickup." What it clearly is, is a Fender Jazz Bass style pickup with a "rail" magnet and stacked coils, sealed in plastic. It's plenty wide eno...

Its circuit is also very similar to early Marshall amps that were derivative of the Bassman. I've got one around here somewhere. It's a great sounding amp. Mighty loud if you crank it, even with the 10" speaker.

If you do try powering up with the original electrolytic filter caps, check that they're not getting too hot by frequently touching the can at first. Sometimes they short, get hot and burst! What a mess! It would also buzz and not play, but some would keep messing with it.

Yellow Melbert Lap Steel

I swiped this picture from an old post by Bob Allen. She's an early 6 string Allen Melbert, unusually decorated. I bought her years ago, like new (which she still is) from her original purchaser. Way back then, Bob told me that my "Yellow Peril" once had an 8 string sister. I'm just curiou...

I use this. It's a welder's tip file set. I've used them on plastic, bone, aluminum and even a steel nut. They have at least a dozen files and I can always find a match for any string gauge. For $5 I can't complain. http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/userpix1504/14651_41gjxS1vJfL_1.jpg Thanks for the t...

I'd play "The Star Spangled Banner," a.k.a. "To Anacreon In Heaven." I don't know of any other hit tunes from The Anacreontic Society. Might catch some criticism for not standing up when I played it, though.

In the bottleneck blues playing community, the National style resonators are very popular, metal bodied "biscuit" types, wood bodied "biscuits," and metal bodied tricones. There's an idea that the spider bridge Dobro types aren't right for blues, but I like them personally. I lik...

I need to correct what I said about the $7 sculpted bar. That copper color where I thought the chrome had already worn through was some sort of stain. It polished off, and the chrome is fine. It has some miniscule scratches from playing with it for a week. And I just realized that what I thought was...

I should say that I've "filed" my nuts with strings only using plastic or bone nuts. If you have a metal nut, you'll have to spring for the nut files.

WHOA! After I found and posted that, Facebook targeted me with this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/162552599201 That is the original chrome bridge cover/handrest on my early SX lap steel, that's sitting on the table beside me! This will fit perfectly, it only needs two screws and holes to attach it.

Shubb has several different contoured bars. I have the Shubb-Pearse SP-1, which has a similar contour of the round bottom and nose to my large Dunlop bullet bar. It, like the Dunlop, is a rather long bar that works well on 8 strings. I find the contoured bar easier to play with, too. There are many ...

I expect that my big old Dunlop bullet bar is made out of one of the 18/8 300 series austenitic stainless alloys. It's nonmagnetic. 440 stainless is martensitic and magnetic. Hard as it can be, it ought to wear a LONG time.

Since I tend to like heavy strings, I have fixed too tight nuts by "sawing" the strings I want to use back and forth in the nut slots by hand till they fit. Regular round wound strings make very effective nut files.

Nuts should be filed to fit the sort of string gauges you use. Too loose isn't good, and too tight makes the strings sit too high. It can also bind the strings when tuning.
