Thanks Nick. Alternatively, if not a Sho~Bud then perhaps an Excel without pedals? If you told me it was a custom based on the Jerry Byrd model, I'd believe it. Obviously that particular axe is not a Canopus... The reason I mention Canopus is because I used to follow a hula dancer on Facebook who re...

Pomai Brown

A question probably for those who get to the various steel guitar festivals in Hawai'i. Anybody know what kind of steel Pomai Brown plays? Great touch and tone! I understand he studied with Jerry Byrd when he was young. I've seen him with what looks to be a Sho~Bud with his name on the front. I thin...

Sublime. Recorded 14th September, 1934. The frypan had barely been available for two years at the time this was recorded. As Andy points out, Dick's playing is a turning point - a fully-formed departure from the acoustic style that immediately preceded it.

Mike: Not to derail the subject, am I right to assume to that Raphael namedrops the same Moonlighters you were apart of? Was there any crossover between the two of you?

I second this emotion - Rich is really great. I play non-pedal in C6th-centric tunings - and I don't see that changing - but I have been dabbling with pedals/E9th as well. I have found Rich's Patreon to be a fun resource. For someone who has little intention of playing pedal steel to an audience, it...

Hi Rich,

Thanks for posting - I always keep one eye on your non-pedal stuff over in the other section!

I love hearing Hawaiian played on the pedal steel and aspire to do so myself. Bill Stafford is another artist who inspires me in that direction.

I guess it depends what you're going for, but I'd look at King's Serenade ('Imi Au Ia 'Oe), Green Rose Hula, things like that. I can't overstate how much there is to be learned from the very simplest Hawaiian melodies, if you really focus on the steel guitar techniques which emphasise the "Hawa...

I've hardly been able to get away from this song for the last month or two.

Can anyone else recommend later work with Leon's steel playing?

I really love this, surely there are other "late period" examples beside the last of the Texas Playboys.

On top, treble-side is the only option for me. Put it anywhere else and you're removing the ability to make volume swells with your pinky while you pick. Of course, you may use a volume pedal to achieve the same effect. As someone who plays Hawaiian, it's not just the tone of the frypan but the simp...

Thanks for the link to Michael Johnstone's playing. Phenomenal slants remind me of Billy Robinson, amazing moving voices that seem like pedal steel at first listen. The Billy Hew Len archive, recorded by Hal Smith on various visits to Hawai'i, are a fountain of knowledge when it comes to A6th-based ...

I'm listening through the Billy Hew Len tapes again at the moment - and I am dead certain he demonstrates this tuning to Hal Smith. Will go back and dig for it after work!

Just love Mikiya's solo work, and thanks for linking in this thread. Above my pay grade, but really inspirational.

Interesting point, Jeff. Mileage may vary, but I'm with Rich on this one. Narrow string spacing creates a more acute angle, but my hand naturally wants to throw the slant a bit further anyway, so my intonation is better with narrower string spacing. I think a lot of it comes down to how you hold the...

At the moment I'm playing a John Allison S-8 console. Plays like a Fender Stringmaster, with some aesthetic inspiration from National New Yorkers.

They run about USD $1100 new.

Duane, I've often wondered the same thing.

Magnatone amps with Magnatone consoles, and Fender amps with Fender consoles?

Is it safe to assume that it's how artist endorsements would have worked, but am I jumping the gun to suggest endorsements at all?
