Unless you tune every string straight up, a tuner that has the offsets programmed in is the way to go. Peterson StroboPlus HD does this and more. There are a few phone apps that let you program custom offsets. I use gStrings as a backup to my Peterson. It's very simple to set up a customized tuning....

Once the steel's upside down in the case, another minute or two would see it totally packed up and secure. Surely our lives aren't that short! :) I don't think this about saving time. The case often doubles the weight of the guitar. Even using split cases, my steel in the case is my heaviest piece ...

Re: Tone Struggles
Well, last night I was in the studio practicing, and I mentioned it to the engineer, and he showed me the spectrum analyzer for my channel... NOTHING below the low-mids. This was my DI signal. I'm not sure exactly what you're calling low-mids, but keep in mind that the lowest note on an E9 is aroun...

I have enough strings to last my lifetime due to buying sets to get the 3rd string .011. My question is, can I substitute a .015 without problem and a noticeable difference..... If not a .015 and if a .012 works, which I don't have, will a .013 be close enough. Thanks It sounds like you've been ste...

Re: Adjustable intonation
Dave, I'm pretty sure the reasoning behind sweetened tunings has little or nothing to do with compensated bridges.Dave Hepworth wrote:
If this system was deployed would it negate the use of sweetened tuning charts as you could do sweetened intonation at the " bridge roller "

In my case, my choice was just serendipity. There aren't any music shops around here that sell steels. Only a few come up for sale locally, and that's pretty much word of mouth. Back in the mid 80's I was playing a borrowed Sho-Bud when I heard of an S-10 MSA up for sale. The price was right, so I b...

Re: more pics of mystery steel
More pics - no visible branding or ornamentation. seems inexpensively made. I have not been able to test the pedals and lever because the one of the guitars legs that the lower pedal mechanism attaches to has been ripped out of the cabinet, socket and all; I can mechanically fix this, but not tonig...

Prior to buying a Peterson tuner, I used the Peterson PitchGrabber clip-on pickup along with the phone app PitchLabPro. Currently I'm using a Peterson StroboPlus HD with the TC-3 clip-on pickup which keeps the tuner out of my signal chain. If your phone has a headphone jack (or you have an old unuse...

Jordan, there are a couple of ways to chart out copedents. The above one for Buddy Cage is more of a graphic representation from the viewpoint of a seated player. The arrows on the left side represent the left knee, pedals in the middle, and the arrows on the right are for the right knee. Another wa...

Thank you all....so maybe nothing wrong with the bar specifically, except that chrome would have been a better choice? Of course there is more friction on the wound strings, but that's consistent with the roughness of the winds. The binding on the plain strings isn't consistent. It's hard to explain...

Shubb SP-2 tone bar problems
I recently picked up a used Dobro and the Stevens bar that was included in the deal is kind of banged up. I did a little research and decided to try a Schubb SP-2, and ordered one online. I really like the heft and shape but I've noticed one annoying thing. When sliding it on the plain strings, the ...

I play your setup on my Derby and have changed every steel I've had, to that setup. Basically, do what Larry Hobson said. Just mount the bell crank at the end of the cross shaft, being careful to allow enough room for clearance. I must admit, I have a few extra parts to experiment with, but thinkin...

I play a 1980 S-10 Vintage XL with a single coil SuperSustain II pickup. I can't say enough good things about the construction of this guitar. It's solid, and built to last. Tonally, it is on the dark side, although the amp makes a big difference. Practicing through my Roland Cube 80, or my Fender D...

Great ideas. This gives me a lot to think about. I am worried that rods with too much bend would be unstable. Also, the existing rods to LKR have zero extra length to spare for bending. My goal is to get the same setup on both of my steels. My MSA doesn't have the 2nd string raise. RKL raises 1+7 to...

Re: swapping leavers on a derby
Same thing on my derby. All I did was put the bell crank at the end of the square close enough to hang on before slipping off onto the round part. then bend an off set on the pull rod to bring it on over to line up with the changer finger. Off set bend can be anywhere along the length of the rod wh...

Swapping levers on Derby....advice needed.
I've just acquired a Derby SD10 (3x5) which is set up with both E's on the left. I've been playing with E lower on RKL for years, and that's how my other guitar (MSA S10) is set up. In theory, the Derby should be easy to swap RKL and LKR, but I've run into a problem. On the Derby, RKL has the common...
